Who inspired me to become a Math Teacher?
One day, my father woke up in the morning and told me, “You will be somebody anyway. He told me that he liked my discipline, my character, and my politeness. With what my father told me, I behaved myself like a humble child, where I decided to follow everything my teachers taught me at school, such as social sciences, literature, physics, and chemistry, but among all the subjects, there was one that I liked the most. It was mathematics. Why did I like mathematics so very much? I like it because I found myself understanding it more than every other subject. In every test that my teacher gave me, I earned a 90 or above. I can tell you that I did not like mathematics before.
I came to like mathematics because there was a mathematics teacher that I will never forget; his name is Joseph Bony; he was a very methodical teacher; he really loved what he was doing. He always took the time to explain every detail in mathematics so that everybody could understand. He even gave special attention to me, where he decided to teach me to make me understand better. Mr. Bony did not have a problem staying behind to work with me so that I could understand the math concepts. With his help, I became so smart. I was intelligent enough to tutor other students who could not understand the math concepts. I was becoming an important tutor for all other students because of Mr. Bony. With such intelligence, I became a tutor for all students in my community who had problems understanding how to solve math problems.
I always said, “Whenever I am done with my classical studies, I want to study law at the university. Unfortunately, I could not major in law due to the political circumstances of Haiti. I could not have any godfather to represent me as a law student. I became a computer science student instead. I got the chance to enroll in a computer science school named INUQUA, where I spent 4 years before I graduated with a degree in computer science. With that degree, I became officially a math instructor at the high school level. I had spent 5 years teaching mathematics for Haitian public schools before I came to the United States.
When I arrived here in America, I went back to school to major in mathematics and science. I spent 4 years at Miami Dade College to become a math teacher again. I graduated after 4 years with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and science. I became officially a highly qualified math teacher for Florida State. Two years later, I graduated with my master's degree in mathematics Education at Barry University. Right now, I am a doctoral student in Curriculum Research and Evaluation. I have been teaching as a full-time math teacher since then for Miami-Dade County Public Schools. I can say that every day I go to work, I never miss a day. I do that because I love my job. Teaching is my passion.
In addition, I have been teaching at the college level for 5 years. I teach college algebra and statistics. I love teaching. This is a pleasure for me. Teaching represents my life, not only a job.
