What is now a standard way of connecting devices to the internet and communicating? The term ‘IoT’ has been around for a long time, but it was only until recently that we realized how close we have come to mass production or communication through it. We are all aware there are billions of pieces of communications equipment connected to the internet. These can be cars, phones, printers, watches, microwaves, coffee machines, music players, or TV remote control to name just some examples. All these are available at the click of a button; no longer do you need an engineer.

For many years, the internet did not provide any real benefits other than being a means of communication between friends, and in recent times we have started seeing its potential as being used by businesses of all sizes to connect customers with their own data and information. A large number of companies now use this technology to generate new ways of communicating with their clients, partners, and employees. By combining data from customer databases with mobile phone networks, web sources, and wireless and wired systems, customers increasingly seek out data and information about various products and services and can make informed decisions.

There are numerous opportunities to take advantage of the potential of IoT. For example, retail stores can create intelligent environments where they understand customers’ behavior to personalize offers, offers, promotions, and discounts, according to data captured through smart sensors, such as water meters, temperature sensors,s or pressure sensors. Businesses could use data analysis techniques to better market to consumers and increase sales whilst reducing costs. In addition to this, IoT provides greater flexibility to respond more quickly to changing environmental conditions. There are also a number of reasons why tech will play a growing role in society.

1. It will improve the efficiency of our lives

The world produces so much stuff that needs to be cleaned up and organized. New technologies can help us to make this easier thanks to robotics or even virtual assistants, which would mean less manual work and greater flexibility in terms of storage space, handling, and cleaning. This type of digital transformation can bring down prices and make life simpler and more convenient for everyone. And as people become more reliant on technology, it will help them to stay safe and secure; this will see security spending increasing dramatically as governments take steps to develop policies. Some of the biggest financial institutions in the UK are already using this technology to manage their risk levels and improve business performance.

2. Faster sharing of data between industries

The global economic impact of Covid-19 has been devastating. As a result, organizations have struggled to share information across sectors. But now as more of us use the internet, more organizations will benefit from faster data sharing and a higher level of transparency. One of the most common problems with sharing data in organizations is that they have different priorities and methods to get data into the system. However, if each department can collect data from multiple sources, then it makes it a lot easier to analyze trends and draw conclusions. Using IoT, the ability to share data more effectively is becoming possible.

3. Data and digital empowerment

The average American adult is estimated to own hundreds of thousands of smart devices such as smart home appliances, tablets, smartphones, game consoles, laptops, and computers. They will be living with these devices, interacting with them, and allowing them to access and consume information from the internet. From managing your finances to keeping track of shopping lists, owning a device like Siri can provide much-needed assistance and convenience for individuals. According to research firm IDC, worldwide growth is expected to rise to 22 percent in 2021 and 27 percent by 2025. This equates to approximately 1 billion new devices being made daily, creating an incredible opportunity for brands to reach out and grow with the rapidly growing demand for digital capabilities.

4. Creating new jobs and skills gaps

There are plenty of careers that are currently unfilled by the millions of people who already own smart devices. The majority of occupations are currently based around computer science and programming, but as technology becomes widespread throughout the economy, the sector as a whole may find itself under significant pressure. To combat this, we need to tackle some key issues including skill shortages as well as unemployment by empowering those struggling financially. The government needs to encourage investment in training workers to improve skills, to help provide a better workforce and reduce unemployment. A good place to start would be by supporting local schools as they implement innovative approaches to train professionals as it stands to benefit both the industry and the individual. Furthermore, we need to support small businesses that want to expand their horizons and employ skilled professionals. Those who already own smart devices can go down to the local shop and look for inspiration on whether or not something might interest them.

5. Enhancing accessibility, inclusion, and equity

There are nearly 4.5 million non-English speakers in the United States, yet English is still the mother tongue of around 30% of the population. Although being able to speak English is an achievement, over 70 percent of youth in the U.S. are unable to speak English fluently, according to America English Language Association. However, due to language barriers, young adults tend to feel isolated from others. When the digital divide is wide, it is easy to lose sight of how important it is to ensure everyone feels included. So to close this gap in society, there needs to be a positive change and the introduction of smart devices that allow people to connect with others regardless of linguistic differences.
