It is back to school time or close to it. What does this time of year mean to you. To me it is a time to look forward to seeing old friends and maybe making some new ones as well. It was a time of getting some new clothes and new supplies from notebooks, folders and binders along with pens and pencils, even though the schools at the time I was in school supplied at least a paper tablet and in the earlier grades a box of crayons along with a pencil along with all the old and maybe new textbooks pertaining to your new grade. I was a student of the 1970's and I remember having textbooks from the 1950's and 1960's to study from at least till I got to fifth grade when the school district bought new textbooks.
Back to School
B is for all the books that one will study-
A is the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag every morning-
C is for the caring principals-
K is for the Kleenex tissues that one may need-
T is for the classroom teachers-
O is for order we all had to follow in the classroom0
S is for the studying we were going to do-
C is for the customs and rules that one had to follow-
H is for help that we needed from time to time-
O is for opportunities that we had to learn-
O is also for the organization of our desks and binders-
L is for all the learning that we have and will accomplish as even as adults we still have to do.
Back to school is also a time that some of us look forward to going to high school reunions and seeing some old friends if we can. This is also a time that we begin to hear football practice and the band camp learning and practicing the skills that are needed to make the football games enjoyable for all students and alumni. Oh, don't forget the cheerleaders and all the 'peppy' cheers along with the 'pep rallies' on Friday afternoons.

Back to school was also a time depending on what grade you were going into that you started to think what kind of books was I going to be reading and studying. During the elementary years it was just learning to read before reading to learn, but there were some books worth reading at this early level. During the middle school and high school years this was the time when the teachers would make sure that you were actually comprehending what you were reading and studying for these were the years that we were told counted towards getting into college if we wanted to go or went.

Now of the track a little, but here is another memory of going back to school that we all maybe remember. Who remembers learning how to write cursive. This is a skill that I began to learn in the second grade, and if I remember right I was the first maybe the second one to 'perfect' this skill. I even remember being yelled at, kind of, by the teacher to put the writing away and get out the math book. She, the teacher, had a way of looking at you if you weren't quite listening. I just remember being so proud of myself for mastering such a skill other than spelling.
So, back to school time already with all the shopping for new clothes and supplies. The wondering what your new teacher is going to be and like and catching up with all the happenings of the summer with friends you have not seen since the end of last year. To all going back to school as students and teachers-- Good luck!
