Uruguay’s Ronald Araujo ruled out

Uruguay faces a significant challenge as they head into their Copa America semi-final against Colombia without their star central defender, Ronald Araujo. Coach Marcelo Bielsa confirmed Araujo’s absence during a press conference on Tuesday, following the defender's injury in Uruguay’s recent victory over Brazil.

The Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) revealed that Araujo suffered a "muscular injury" to his right thigh during the match against Brazil, which took place in Las Vegas on Saturday. This injury forced Araujo to leave the pitch in the first half. Bielsa, addressing reporters at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, admitted that Araujo’s injury was a significant setback for the team. "We are not going to be able to count on Araujo," he stated, acknowledging the gap this leaves in Uruguay’s defense.

In Araujo’s absence, Atletico Madrid’s Jose Maria Gimenez, who replaced him during the Brazil match, is expected to start against Colombia. Gimenez stepped in at the 33rd minute of the game against Brazil and is likely to be Bielsa’s first choice to fill the defensive void.

Uruguay's defensive woes do not end with Araujo. The team will also miss the services of right-back Nahitan Nandez, who was sent off in the bruising second half against Brazil. Bielsa has yet to decide on Nandez’s replacement, with Guillermo Varela and winger Agustin Canobbio being the primary candidates for the role.

Despite these challenges, Bielsa remains focused on the upcoming match, praising Colombia's progress under coach Nestor Lorenzo. Colombia, unbeaten in 27 matches, presents a formidable challenge. Bielsa emphasized the strength of their opponents, stating, “They are a big rival, on a positive run of results... Brazil were a very demanding opponent and Colombia has to be viewed the same way. They are a team that has good individuals and that has been working together for a long time and that gives them a certain style.”

Colombia's coach, Nestor Lorenzo, downplayed the potential advantage of Uruguay’s injury troubles. "I don't consider it a decisive advantage. I think they have great players to play in the same positions. It happened to us with (Jhon) Lucumi and the replacements have fulfilled (their task)," Lorenzo remarked. He highlighted the return of Jhon Lucumi, who has significantly improved since his injury in Colombia’s opener against Paraguay, hinting at the possibility of Lucumi participating in the semi-final.

Additionally, Colombia welcomes back midfielder Jefferson Lerma after serving a one-match suspension, ensuring Lorenzo has a full squad to choose from. Colombia secured their semi-final spot with a dominant 5-0 win over Panama, equalling the country’s unbeaten run record set between 1992 and 1994.

Despite their impressive streak, Lorenzo remains grounded, focusing on the immediate challenge rather than the unbeaten record. "I never mention the unbeaten thing. This is about taking it one game at a time," he said, emphasizing a step-by-step approach.

As Uruguay and Colombia prepare for their semi-final clash, the other semi-final features Argentina and Canada, set to compete in New Jersey on Tuesday. The winners of these matches will face each other in the Copa America final, scheduled to be held in Miami on Sunday.

This semi-final encounter promises to be an intense battle between two determined teams. Uruguay, despite their injury setbacks, will rely on their depth and Bielsa's tactical acumen. Colombia, on the other hand, aims to continue their impressive unbeaten run and secure a spot in the final.

Football fans can expect a thrilling match as these two teams vie for a chance to lift the prestigious Copa America trophy. The absence of key players like Araujo and Nandez adds an element of uncertainty, but also an opportunity for other players to step up and make a mark on this grand stage.
