Travel tips 101

By Eloisa SchiroliPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

If you're going on vacation, I'm certain you might have overlooked a few essential items like a crayon or a pillowcase. I have gathered some top-notch travel tips for your ultimate vacation planning. Consider these carefully when deciding on your destination. If you have some flexibility, it's best to avoid traveling in July due to high costs and crowded places. Opt for the shoulder season, like April and May or September and October in Greece, when the weather is still pleasant, but there are fewer tourists, and accommodations are more affordable.

When searching for flights, always use incognito mode to prevent tracking cookies from affecting your results. Additionally, try choosing a different home country and currency with a better exchange rate to find cheaper flight options. Create a frequent flyer account regardless of the airline you're traveling with to accumulate miles and eventually get a free flight, even if you fly with different airlines. Keep your plane ticket until the miles are posted on your account. In the case of non-refundable tickets, avoid canceling and not showing up; instead, if the flight gets canceled, you'll be eligible for a refund.

For seating arrangements on the plane, if you're traveling with someone, leave the middle seat empty between you, increasing the chance that it won't be booked. If you're lucky, you may end up with three seats for the two of you. If not, politely ask your neighbor to switch seats so you can sit together.

Make the most of long layovers by choosing longer ones that allow you to explore the layover city before your next flight. Join loyalty programs when booking hotels to enjoy special treatment and potential upgrades. Inform the hotel staff if you're celebrating a special occasion to receive extra perks. Rather than relying solely on hotel booking websites, consider calling hotels directly to secure better prices. Alternatively, explore Airbnb options for affordable and luxurious accommodations, and don't discount hostels, which can be fun and offer opportunities to meet fellow travelers.

When packing, create a checklist on your phone a few days before your trip and keep adding items as you remember them. To save space, roll your clothes and place spillable items like shampoos in a shower cap. Utilize packing cubes to keep everything organized. Consider creative storage solutions like using a Tic Tac box for bobby pins or using a carabiner to keep hair ties together. Bring a pillowcase to stuff with clothes for a makeshift pillow and include a dryer sheet to keep your clothes fresh during the journey. Always have a copy of your passport in your wallet and a scanned copy stored securely on the cloud. A power bank, crayon (for writing), clothespin (for keeping toothbrush off counters), and bread clip (for various purposes, including flip-flop maintenance) are handy additions to your travel kit.

Prioritize comfort in your outfit choices, opting for sweatpants, leggings, and a comfortable jacket. A fringe scarf can double as a cover-up and fashion accessory. Wear compression socks to prevent swelling during the trip, and noise-canceling headphones can be a lifesaver on noisy flights.

To safeguard your valuables from pickpockets, make them appear less attractive by placing tape on expensive items as if they were broken. Consider donating leftover foreign coins before leaving the country to lighten your load and perform a good deed.
