The Stubborn Goat

Flexibility prevents unnecessary struggles.

By Shahzad KhanPublished 9 months ago 3 min read

In a quiet village nestled between rolling green hills, there lived a hardworking farmer named Ramesh. He was known for his patience and kindness, but even he struggled with one of his animals—a goat named Bholu. Bholu was strong, healthy, and well-fed, but he had a terrible habit: he was unbelievably stubborn. Once he set his mind on something, no amount of coaxing, pulling, or scolding could change it.

The Stubborn Standoff

One bright morning, Ramesh decided it was time to take Bholu to the village market to sell him. He tied a sturdy rope around Bholu’s neck and set off down the winding dirt path. At first, Bholu trotted along obediently, but as they passed a lush patch of grass near a small ditch, he suddenly stopped.

His nostrils flared as he sniffed the fresh greens. Without warning, he dug his hooves into the ground and refused to move.

"Come on, Bholu," Ramesh said, giving the rope a gentle tug. "We don’t have time for this. The market is waiting!"

But Bholu didn’t care. He wanted that grass, and he wasn’t going anywhere.

Ramesh sighed and pulled harder. "Bholu, enough! There’s plenty of grass at home!"

The more Ramesh pulled, the more Bholu resisted. The goat lowered his head, his muscles tense, and pulled backward with all his might. The rope strained between them, and soon, the two were locked in a ridiculous tug-of-war.

The Wise Observer

A group of villagers passing by stopped to watch the strange spectacle. Among them was Guruji, an elderly man known for his wisdom. He stroked his long white beard and chuckled.

"Ramesh," he called out, "why are you fighting with a goat? You’ll only tire yourself out."

Ramesh wiped the sweat from his forehead, panting. "Guruji, this stubborn animal won’t listen! I need to get him to the market."

Guruji smiled. "Sometimes, force is not the answer. Try a different approach."

Ramesh frowned. "What else can I do? He won’t budge!"

"Think differently," Guruji advised. "If pushing doesn’t work, try guiding."

A Change in Strategy

Ramesh thought for a moment, then had an idea. Instead of pulling Bholu forward, he loosened the rope and took a few steps backward, pretending to return home.

Bholu, sensing the slack in the rope, relaxed. His ears perked up as he watched Ramesh retreat.

Then, in one smooth motion, Ramesh walked in a wide circle, gently leading Bholu away from the tempting grass and back onto the path toward the market. This time, Bholu followed without resistance.

The villagers burst into laughter and applause. Guruji nodded approvingly. "You see? Flexibility prevents unnecessary struggles."

Ramesh smiled, realizing the truth in those words. He had been so focused on forcing Bholu to obey that he hadn’t considered a smarter approach. By being patient and adaptable, he had achieved his goal without exhausting himself or the goat.

The Lesson Learned

As they continued toward the market, Ramesh reflected on the lesson. Life was full of obstacles, and stubbornness—whether from a goat or a person—only made things harder. Sometimes, the best way forward was not through force, but through flexibility.

Bholu, now walking peacefully beside him, seemed content. Perhaps even goats could learn when met with patience instead of resistance.

The Moral of the Story

This simple tale teaches us an important truth: Stubbornness creates unnecessary struggles, while flexibility leads to smoother paths.

Forcing things often leads to resistance. Whether dealing with animals, people, or life’s challenges, pushing too hard can backfire.

Adaptability is strength. Being willing to change tactics can save time, energy, and frustration.

Patience wins in the end. Sometimes, stepping back and trying a different approach is the wisest move.

Just as Ramesh learned to guide Bholu instead of fighting him, we too can navigate life’s challenges with wisdom and grace. After all, a river does not fight the rocks in its way—it simply flows around them.

Final Thoughts

The next time you find yourself in a stubborn standoff—whether with a person, a problem, or even your own thoughts—remember Bholu the goat. Ask yourself: Am I making this harder than it needs to be? Sometimes, the solution isn’t to push harder but to step back, rethink, and find a gentler way forward.

Flexibility prevents unnecessary struggles. And that is a lesson worth remembering.

The End.
