The life of a lice

How they survive our head

The life of a lice

If you think that the busiest creature on earth is a human, then you probably haven't counted the lice yet. Yes, lice! That tiny, hair-hiding creature, whose life is short but full of drama. Today we will learn about its life cycle, from birth to adulthood.

We are starting with the lice egg. But first, the lice mother, whom we can call more the 'itch goddess' than the mother, lays one egg after another on the hair roots. Scientists call it "nit". You may say, "What a pain, Dad!" But this is a matter of pride for the lice mother. She thinks, "These eggs will grow up and take over my kingdom."

It takes about 7 to 10 days for these eggs to hatch into baby lice. However, it depends on the weather, the temperature of the head, and the geometry of the hair. If the head is hot (meaning hot weather), it hatches faster. If the head is cold (meaning cold environment), it takes a little longer. Many women wrap their wet heads in towels, which is a paradise for lice. The humid weather is also accompanied by soft scalp in the bath water. So how fun it is to bite and eat blood!

When the baby lice hatches, they think, “Yahoo, I’m coming to the world!” But the world is actually just a head. Little does the baby know that from now on, they will live in a jungle of hair, which is occasionally flooded with shampoo rain.

After hatching, the lice become “nymphs”. That is, the pre-adult form of a teenager. Just like you think when you get to class five, “I’ve grown up”—the lice nymph also thinks the same. But no, they still have three more stages to grow up.

The nymph stage usually lasts for 7-10 days. During this time, they suck the juice from the human scalp every day. Although it may sound scary, it is a tempting food for lice. While you are restless with your itchy head, the lice are busy with their “Chinese buffet”!

The nymph molts three times, as if leveling up in a mobile game. Each time is an upgrade! And at the end—ding ding ding! It is a mature lice.

Once an adult, the life of a lice is like a Bollywood movie. A very short time, but it is all dramatic. The average lifespan of a lice is 30 days. But what a lice does in a month—not many can do in a lifetime.

A female lice lays about 8-10 eggs a day. About 100 eggs in her entire life! That is, she starts an “itch hostel” at the roots of her hair.

The love life of lice is also extraordinary. Once they pair up—“tight bond”, no excuses! They move around together, eat, make babies, and increase itching—that is, “happy family, lice lifestyle.” That's why sometimes a pair of lice are caught between the nails.

This little life of a lice is very exciting, right? But in this excitement, a bad time suddenly comes—when medicated shampoo falls on the head. Then the lice think, “Oh mother! Tsunami!”

Shampoo falls like rain, and the combing revolution comes to the hair forest. One by one, the eggs, nymphs, and full lice die. Some had their stomachs full of blood, some had just fallen in love—all is over.

However, some lice hide in the “hair cave”, they forever engage in “survival politics”. It is because of these guerrilla lice that the itch returns to the head, and with the itch, another batch of “egg armies” return.
