The Foolish Monkey

A Lesson in Curiosity and Consequence

By Jahangir khan Published 9 months ago 3 min read

Once upon a time, in the heart of a lush, green jungle, lived a young monkey named Miko. Miko was not like the other monkeys in his troop. While the others were cautious, wise, and followed the rules set by the elders, Miko was known for his endless curiosity and mischievous antics. He was always looking for something new to try, somewhere strange to explore, or some trick to pull.

“I just want to have fun!” Miko would often say as he swung from branch to branch, ignoring the warnings of his elders.

One bright morning, the jungle was buzzing with excitement. The fruit season had begun, and the trees were heavy with juicy mangoes, sweet bananas, and vibrant papayas. The elder monkeys reminded everyone to stay close to the troop and not venture beyond the river, where the wild lands began.

But of course, Miko had other plans.

“I’ve heard stories,” he whispered to his friend Tiko, “of a tree that grows golden bananas across the river. Bananas so sweet, birds sing when you peel them!”

Tiko rolled his eyes. “That’s just a story, Miko. The golden bananas aren’t real. And even if they were, the river is dangerous. Crocodiles live there.”

But Miko was already swinging toward the edge of the jungle.

Ignoring the warnings, he leapt onto a vine and soared across the river. For a moment, he felt like the king of the jungle. The vine held firm, and he landed on the other side with a triumphant grin.

The wild side of the jungle was quieter, darker. The trees were taller, the plants denser. It smelled unfamiliar. But Miko, driven by his imagination and pride, marched forward.

After an hour of searching, Miko spotted a strange tree deep in the forest. Its trunk twisted like a snake, and its leaves shimmered with dew. Hanging from its branches were bright yellow fruits — bananas, unlike any he’d ever seen. They almost looked… golden.

“See? I was right!” Miko cheered. “No one will believe this!”

He climbed up and grabbed a banana, peeled it, and took a big bite. It was incredibly sweet, but as he reached for a second, he heard a rustling below.

Out from the bushes crept a pair of glowing eyes, then another… and another. In seconds, Miko realized he was surrounded by jungle jackals. Their eyes were sharp, and their teeth sharper.

Panicking, Miko dropped the bananas and leapt from the tree. The jackals snarled and chased after him. He swung through the branches as fast as he could, dodging low vines and leaping over roots. But the wild jungle was nothing like home.

He tripped on a thick root and tumbled into a muddy pit. The jackals circled the edge, growling, waiting.

Just then, a loud hoot echoed through the trees. From above, an old owl swooped down and screeched, startling the jackals. In that moment, a troop of monkeys appeared — his own family — led by Tiko and Elder Naru. With sticks and stones, they scared off the jackals and pulled Miko out of the pit.

Back home, bruised and embarrassed, Miko sat before the elders.

“You’re lucky we came when we did,” Elder Naru said sternly. “Your foolishness could have cost you your life.”

Miko lowered his head. “I just… I wanted to prove something. I didn’t think it would be that dangerous.”

“Curiosity is not a bad thing,” the elder said gently, “but wisdom is knowing when to follow it — and when to listen to those who’ve seen more than you.”

From that day on, Miko changed. He was still curious, still playful, but he learned to balance his thirst for adventure with the wisdom of those around him. And while he never forgot the taste of those golden bananas, he never again crossed the river alone.

Instead, he told his tale to younger monkeys — not as a brag, but as a warning
