The Clever Crow and the Tricky Fox

A forest lesson about trust, trickery, and being wise

By Imran KhanPublished 8 months ago 2 min read

Once upon a time, in a quiet forest, there lived a clever crow named Coco. Coco was black, shiny, and smart. He lived on a tall tree near a small river. Every day, Coco flew around the forest looking for food. He was careful and never trusted anyone easily.

Not far from the tree lived a fox named Freddy. Freddy was clever too, but in a different way. He liked to trick other animals to get what he wanted. Freddy often went hungry because the other animals in the forest had learned not to trust him.

One sunny morning, Coco found a piece of cheese near a picnic spot. A family had come there the day before and left some food behind. Coco quickly grabbed the cheese in his beak and flew back to his tree. He was so happy! “This will be a delicious breakfast,” he thought.

Freddy the fox was walking nearby and saw Coco with the cheese.

“Mmm… cheese! I want that cheese!” Freddy said to himself. But he knew he couldn’t climb the tree. He had to think of a trick.

Then Freddy got an idea. He walked to the tree and looked up at Coco.

“Good morning, my friend Coco!” Freddy said in a sweet voice.

Coco looked down but didn’t say anything. He still had the cheese in his beak.

“You look so smart and shiny today,” said Freddy. “I’ve always admired your feathers. You are the most beautiful bird in the whole forest!”

Coco was surprised. He didn’t hear compliments like that often. But he was also careful.

“I’ve heard you can sing better than any other bird,” Freddy continued. “Please sing a song for me. I want to hear your beautiful voice!”

Coco felt proud, but he also remembered something his mother told him when he was young: “Never trust someone who flatters too much.”

Still, Coco wanted to show off. He opened his beak to sing, and as he did — plop! — the cheese fell to the ground!

Freddy jumped forward to grab the cheese, but Coco was faster this time. He flew down quickly and picked it up before Freddy could reach it.

Then Coco flew back up to the tree and said, “You almost fooled me, Freddy. But I’m not as foolish as I look!”

Freddy was surprised. “Oh no!” he said. “You’re too smart for me.”

Coco laughed and said, “You tried to trick me with sweet words, but I knew something was wrong. It’s not kind to lie and steal, Freddy.”

Freddy felt a little ashamed. He realized he had been caught in his own trick.

“I’m sorry, Coco,” said Freddy. “You’re right. I should find my own food instead of trying to steal from others.”

Coco smiled. “It’s never too late to change. Try being honest, and maybe one day, you’ll have friends who share with you.”

From that day on, Freddy tried to be a better fox. He stopped tricking others and started hunting for food on his own. Slowly, the other animals began to trust him a little more.

As for Coco, he stayed clever and careful. He always remembered that sweet words are not always true — and it’s wise to think before trusting someone.
