Tuberculosis (TB) has been else: you like and DASH in India, with global TB burden for some time. To tackle this disease, the Indian government embarked on the 100-day Intensified TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan on 7th December, 2024. This campaign, it was ambitious and aimed at accelerating the detection and treatment of TB cases, especially in vulnerable populations, as well as mobilizing community involvement in the nation’s fight against the disease.

Novel Approaches for Early Detection

An integral part of the campaign was the use of state-of-the-art diagnostic tools to enhance the early and precise detection of TB. Mobile X-ray machines were sent out to areas with high-risk demographics such as diabetics, smokers, alcohol drinkers, people living with HIV, the elderly, people with low body mass index (BMI), and household contacts of TB patients. Immediate detection of suspected TB cases was achieved with AI-powered X-rays, and Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests (NAAT) were used for confirmation. By adopting this strategy — even symptomlessly diagnosed cases that would have otherwise been undiagnosed were caught and treated, thus cutting transmission and saving lives.

Outreach and Screening: Going the Extra Mile

The campaign spanned the nation, with screening efforts deployed across the country. Screening of 12.97 crore persons from vulnerable populations was done which led to notification of 7.19 lakh TB patients. Out of these cases, a remarkable 2.85 lakh were asymptomatic, demonstrating how the campaign's robust and extensive screening approach uncovered several hidden TB cases.

Mobilization at participation communicative

The program was greatly aided prior to its launch by an unprecedented mobilization of communities under the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan. More than 13.46 lakh Nikshay Shivirs (TB screening camps) were conducted with active participation from over 30,000 elected representatives including the Members of Parliament, Members of Legislative Assemblies, Panchayati Raj Institutions and Urban Local Bodies representatives. Droves of corporate partners and average citizens alike rallied to the cause, underscoring the point that TB elimination is everyone's mission and can only be achieved through the participation of all sectors of society.

Care that extends beyond medical intervention

Acknowledging that dealing with TB goes beyond medicine, the campaign called for all-round assistance for patients. Under the Ni-kshay Mitra initiative, individual citizens and organizations supported TB-affected families with nutritional aid, resulting in thousands of food basket deliveries. The support network would thus not only serve to meet the physical, dietary, and psychosocial needs of patients and support them through their treatment but also potentially improve treatment adherence and better recovery outcomes.

The Focus on the Future Will act from the Government

The Indian government is making strides towards TB elimination as seen from the multi-level political will, resources to meet the challenge and the strategic initiatives. They are accumulated in country, establishment of 826 drug-resistant TB centers, improve the access to patients drug-resistant TB strains, specialized treatment. In addition, the government is set to expand the Intensified TB Elimination Drive to all districts so that all citizens can avail of modern diagnostics, quality treatment and constant community support.

Prime Minister's Endorsement

PM Narendra Modi praised the success of TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan as being instrumental in building a robust framework for a TB-free India. Noting with appreciation the progress made towards TB elimination, he pointed out the success of the campaign in inspiring community action at the grassroots level.

Challenges and the Road Ahead

While the 100-day campaign brought the country closer, India still faces challenges on its journey to eliminate TB by 2025. In spite of this, blending the recent data on TB burden reported by the World Health Organization, India is still going to account for a large share of the global TB burden which suggests that sustained efforts are needed to reach the intended results. Tackling social determinants of health, like poverty and malnutrition, and ensuring sustained community engagement will be critical to overcome these challenges.

Conclusion

India’s determination to defeat tuberculosis during the 100-day Intensified TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan has been unprecedented. The campaign is not only achieving noteworthy results in diagnosing and treating cases of TB but has also been effective through novel approaches, widespread community engagement, and holistic patient management (3). Challenges still remain, but what this initiative has laid its foundation for is a strong platform to work towards a TB-free India. It will be crucial to overcoming the ambitious target of eradicating TB by 2025 with sustained political commitment, community involvement, and cohesive health policies.
