Student Loan Forgiveness
The impact of student debt. What it means for our economy, and what we need to do now to fix it.
Many students who pull loans are too young and naive to understand what sort of debt they will face. Others are struggling financially and are desperate to relieve their monetary troubles. We must pardon student loan debt. Doing so will ease our citizens to resume their education and earn the tools to help them live a healthy, sustainable lifestyle.
I recall researching colleges one particular day. One college harassed me by calling several times a day on various phone numbers. Somehow they obtained my cellphone number. Finally, I got sick of it and answered one of the calls. A woman on the phone said she was an advisor of sorts. She claimed to encourage people to enroll in their college. Allegedly she worked with a team that helped students apply for financial aid, student loans, and grants. It all sounded strange. How exactly did she already set up an account for me to begin classes in the fall? Wasn't it already past the due date to apply for a fall semester? She was forking information out of me with honeyed words and exciting phrases. Similar to that of a car salesman. Before I knew it, the advisor had arranged for me to talk to another colleague about financial aid and student loans. I immediately hung up the phone and blocked the number. I remember feeling violated. That woman probed information out of me and would not take no for an answer. It was just the same feeling I had when I was peer-pressured by a car salesman to co-sign for my exes vehicle.
Honestly, this happens to many students when being presented with the opportunity to take out student loans. People who apply for these loans are usually struggling financially. They are under the impression that it will be a breeze to pay off. Maybe they are just so desperate they don't want to think about the repercussions. Either way, they deserve to live a comfortable life- capable of raising their children in a succeeding household. Many students who get loans will swim in debt for the rest of their lives. Which will have accumulated after having a hefty interest rate slapped on it.
When you go to college and earn credits or graduate with a degree- you are under the impression that those are recognized everywhere you go. You receive your certificate then they tell you good luck. You shake the staff member's hands enthusiastically then you go about your way. You begin applying for your dream career or to places that will give you opportunities to climb the ladder: with the degree you just earned! Wait a minute, all of those companies keep telling you that your degree isn't credible. Another student; received the credits they wanted but decided to transfer to another college but was informed that the credits were not valid. Both students pulled out loans to continue their education and keep them out of financial struggle. They were under the impression that their college would help them devise payment plans and that there was no reason for worry. Little did they know when their loans were approved, the money was given to them, that the school they had faith in was not credible! These are examples of citizens who struggle every day- met with a fate they couldn't foresee. They not only suffer from debt they will never afford to pay off but will have to work dead-end jobs or attempt to get a new degree from a reputable college. These are people who fall victim to student loan debt. They deserve a refresh! Forgive their debt. So they can be outstanding citizens and prove to their communities that they should live a life of success and comfort!
Thousands of borrowers are struggling to make ends meet and also continue their education. Even more now because of the weight of the Pandemic. Many students had to put their education on hold to move back in with their families. To tend to their sick family members or attend a funeral of someone they lost due to Covid-19. More than half, about 60 percent of Biden's voters, choose to support student loan forgiveness. Biden and his administration also said that they would back a student loan forgiveness bill. Where is that bill now? It has almost been a year since they last discussed the idea of this bill. He has the position, the team, and the tools to begin writing it into play. According to data collected from the U. S. Department of Education, about 45 million borrowers have student loan debt. A total of 36 million would have all of their student loans wiped if the government passed a bill forgiving $50,000.
Student loans have made many middle-aged students hesitate with purchasing houses, cars, and various things that make up the "American Dream". Countless people born around the 1980s continue to pay off student debts, some of which owe over a hundred thousand from their loans. Thanks to student loans and expensive living situations, some have had to resort to living with friends or moving back in with their families. They confess to never having enough money to open a savings account or start a retirement plan. At over 40, numerous single-parents have admitted to feeling disappointed in themselves. They believe that they failed to provide for their children a stable home or environment. They moved around too much, had to work multiple jobs at a time, missed birthdays and major holidays.
How long will American citizens remain in recession once again? We, as consumers, must act now. For us to be a progressive country again, we must be proactive.
