Strangest Last Meal Requests On Death Row

Last Suppers: The Bizarre Requests of Death Row Inmates

By Abdur Rahman Published 2 years ago 4 min read

A fascinating tradition for death row inmates is the infamous farewell dinner, which is practiced in several states in the United States and other nations where the death penalty is permitted. On the eve of their execution, convicted offenders are allowed to choose any meal and beverage they choose as long as they abide by specific rules. These are a few of the most bizarre dinners ever documented.

Victor Harry Feguer made a strange request for his last meal: a single olive with the pit left in. Feguer was executed in 1963 after being found guilty of kidnapping and murder. It was rumored that he intended to be buried next to it, with the olive tree—a symbol of peace—sprouting from his tomb.

In a different way, Gerald Lee Mitchell's final dinner was sweeter. Mitchell was dying on death row, and he was dying to have a real sugar high, therefore he craved an assortment of Jolly Ranchers candy before he faced his final moments.

In 2011, white supremacist and convicted killer Lawrence Russell Brewer feasted lavishly. His last meal requests were outlawed in Texas because he ordered a wide variety of food, including meat feast pizza and fried chicken steaks, but he refused to eat anything when it was delivered.

For his last meal, John Wayne Gacy—the infamous serial killer also known as the killer clown Pogo—placed an order for twelve fried shrimp, a bucket of KFC fries, french fries, and a pound of strawberries, demonstrating his unwavering passion for delicious food.

Due to the notoriously heavy-drinking John Spenkelink, Florida's last meal laws were revised to completely ban alcohol after Spenkelink shared a single flask of Jack Daniels during his last supper with the prison superintendent.

Before being executed in 2002, notorious criminal Aileen Wuornos only requested one cup of black coffee and expressed her belief that she would return on "Independence Day with Jesus."

After being found guilty of murder, Ricky Ray Rector had a final dinner of steak, fried chicken, cherry Kool-Aid, and pecan pie. He did not finish his dessert, saying he was saving it for later, and he left a mysterious note indicating that he would return in the afterlife.

Before being executed in 2001, Timothy McVeigh—the man behind the Oklahoma City bombing—surprisingly asked for two pints of mint chocolate chip ice cream—a seemingly selfless request given his horrific acts.

Though his birthday was three months away, murderer David Leon Woods chose to have his last dinner with his family—a regular pizza and an entire birthday cake.

Known for his dubious life choices, Thomas J. Grasso requested an elaborate spread that included steamed clams, barbecued ribs, and a can of Spaghettios. However, what he received was spaghetti and meatballs, which prompted his last outcry.

The lethal felon Stephen Wayne Anderson left behind an odd combination of flavors with his final meal requests of cottage cheese, grilled cheese sandwiches, and a large amount of radishes.

In 2004, convicted murderer Peter J. Miniel placed an elaborate order for a lavish feast that included pizza, beef enchiladas, tacos, and a variety of sweets and drinks. It appeared as though Miniel was trying to overindulge before his dying.

The Death Row Granny, Velma Barfield, unexpectedly asked for a can of Coke and a packet of Cheez Doodles for her last supper, demonstrating her peculiar taste even though she was raised a Christian.

Murderer Robert Alton Harris's final dinner consisted of a 21-piece bucket of KFC, two large Domino's pizzas, and a variety of beverages. He also left a statement about dancing with the Grim Reaper.

In an attempt to prolong his final meal, Ronnie Lee Gardner created a memorable dining experience just before his execution by placing an order for steak, lobster tail, and apple pie while seeing the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

In a noble effort, Philip Workman asked to have a large vegetarian pizza given to a random homeless person as his last supper. This request led to an unexpected outpouring of vegetarian pizzas to homeless shelters throughout Tennessee.

Before being executed, Angel Nieves Diaz left behind a thought-provoking message in which he condemned the death penalty as a cowardly act by humans as well as a form of retribution. He did this by purposefully declining his last meal.

Known for having two salami sandwiches and a grape jelly sandwich for his last dinner, Oba Chandler chose an odd pairing of flavors for his final meal, leaving a lasting selection before facing his demise.

Rober Dale Conklin was an affluent man who left behind a legacy of excess when he ordered an elaborate dinner for his final supper that included filet mignon, de-veined shrimp, and several side dishes.

One of the most unusual last-meal requests ever made was for a lump of witchcraft soil. This request raised questions about James Edward Smith's motivations before it was turned down, leaving a fascinating enigma around his final meal decision.
