Replace Your Scrolling Addiction with Reading to Improve Your Attention Span

You can’t listen to your friends or focus on your class easily?

By Victory ShedrackPublished about a year ago 4 min read

Scrolling addictions are ruining our lives.

Many of us are stuck in doom scrolling.

Scrolling from 5 minutes to 1 hour and more without even realizing it.

I struggle with scrolling on social media too. I remember that I even procrastinate going to the toilet because I scroll. I stuck and glued to my phone, which makes me end up scrolling even more.

The more I scroll, the more likely I will be to stay in bed and avoid getting out.

Other than that, we started to lose focus. I find it hard to read books, learn courses, and study for my writing.

This lack of focus leads to a short attention span.

  • We find it hard to focus on one task.
  • We find it hard to memorize what people say.
  • We find it hard to sit down and learn something.
  • We find it hard to read a book, even for just 10 minutes.

We find it hard to listen to people when they are talking.

Even so, that doesn’t mean we can’t fix it.

I Replace My Scrolling With Reading
I started to procrastinate and get distracted easily while reading or focusing on something.

I can’t finish my tasks, write with intense focus, or even work on a project.

Then I wanted to change this.

I want to experience great focus in order to write, read, and make my writing of great quality. I want to become better by studying and learning with 1 or 2 hours of courses.

This is where I decided to find a solution for that.

We had a short attention span, or lack of focus. That means the solution to that is to practice our own focus again.

The problem with practicing focus is that it is not easy. Especially when you are just starting out. You can try out meditation, journaling, and many more good habits out there.

But today, I want to share with you a cheat code for improving focus.

You just need to do this every day, and it’s pretty easy if you do it this way.

Once you can get the hang of it, time will take over and help you destroy your scrolling addictions.

The cheat code to practice your focus
The cheat code to building focus is reading.

“Wait, I can’t focus on reading, but the solution to that is reading.”

Yeah, let me explain.

Why reading? Because reading helps you get out of the blue light on your phone if you read in a physical book. Reading is healthy. Other than that, I don’t ask you to focus on reading; focus on just doing it.

But…

I’m going to be honest with you.

  • Reading is boring
  • Reading is not fun
  • Reading is frustrating.

I don’t guarantee that you will find reading enjoyable, like scrolling through social media.

But I guarantee it will help you improve your focus and achieve success.

The key here to reading is pretty easy, and here’s how:

1. Open your book before you check your phone.
You don’t have to read for an hour.

You don’t have to read for 5 hours.

You don’t have to read for 10 hours.

The problem is with your phone. The problem is scrolling through social media and YouTube.

Then why don’t we use those problems for solutions?

So, whenever you really want to check your phone, start opening your book first. If you automatically pick up your phone first, it’s okay. You can put your phone down again and start opening your book. The key here is being aware of it.

When you are aware, you are actually making great progress toward improvement because awareness is needed to break those bad habits. After you open your book, you can start reading for just one sentence.

2. Read for one sentence only.
I don’t ask you to read one chapter.

I don’t ask you to read one passage.

I don’t ask you to read more than one page.

You only need to read one sentence, and then you can start scrolling again.

I know that you might think this is not effective. However, with time, the more you succeed in reading one sentence before checking your phone, the more you will replace those bad habits.

You already read before checking your phone. If you have already read one sentence, then you might go back to scrolling again or not; it is up to you.

What should I do after that?

3. Read after using your phone.
You read before using your phone.

You read after using your phone.

It’s like a sandwich, in which you start and finish your phone activity with reading.

So, your mind will notice that you are actually reading more often. While you find enjoyment in scrolling, you trick yourself out of that enjoyment by reading because you start and finish by reading.

This helps you to start building habits rapidly because habits easily build when you find them enjoyable.

Just do it repeatedly
The key here is to find and win as many as you can.

With one sentence, you can win easily and gain confidence to win the next day. It’s just a matter of consistency, and time will take over.

The point is that you can replace your bad habits.

You just need to be aware, replace them with something good before and after that activity, and then let time take over.

The more you do it, the stronger you become, which the easier it gets
