Public Service Workers are Making under $75,000 A Year

Why are people leaving the field?

By Crystal GametPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

I saw on the news yesterday that a CEO, the head of housing for a non-profit made $250,000. Her main struggle with her job's need for more housing. My thoughts, I wonder what would happen if she took just some of her income and put that back into the housing program every year, I am sure that could help close the gap.

Not Pointing Figures

I know people work hard for the money they earn but maybe the world would be a better place if we just shared a little. We have social workers, teachers, police and so many more working every day making well under $100,000.

So What Is The Problem

Society is wondering why teachers are leaving the classrooms. If you truly don’t love teaching, that teaching degree can get you more than twice as much in another field. Most teachers work at least two jobs, their full-time teaching job doesn’t just end when the bell rings. There are emails that still need to be checked, lesson plans, and grading needs to be done before the next day or over the weekend. Then it’s off to that other part-time job sometimes coaching, another teaching job, and many teachers are waitresses on the weekend.

The social worker is another area that is underpaid. These people see the most difficult people at times. They spend years getting their master's degrees and doing internships only to get under $70,000 if they don’t own their own business.

The military is very underpaid. I am so thankful for these brave men and women that fight for our freedom day in and day out in the Military. Why do we pay our pro athletes more than we do for people keeping us safe and free? Military gets paid less than $30,000 a year, and they get all their housing needs taken care of but it just doesn’t seem like enough for all that they do. These men and women dedicate their whole life to the military. Gone away from home many miss their babies being born, Christmas, and so much more.

The police have one of the scariest and worst jobs. Most people hate them or are scared of them. At every traffic stop, they never know who is waiting for them in the next car. One of the most dangerous jobs you can possibly have and the pay is for sure well under $75,000 yearly. These men and women put their life on the line every day and do not get paid enough.

The firefighter is another area that needs to adjust pay. Not only do they have low pay they also have volunteer firefighters. The whole concept is bizarre. Who wants to run into a burning building and possibly die for free? We are very lucky that we do have men and women that are willing to do this every day.

Most Nurses make around $60,000 a year. That does not compare to $250,000 like the CEO. The nurse works very hard to take care of our loved ones and even us when we are ill. They run from the time they punch in until they punch out.

I am not writing this to make people feel bad about these people in these fields but I am just writing for awareness. When we pay our Hollywood stars and athletes millions. We pay our business professionals six figures, sometimes seven figures. I am just wondering if maybe we just need to do a little adjusting with salary.

It’s Their Fault

One argument “I hear is well they chose that field.” Yes, yes they did but what if they did not? What if everyone went after a field because of money not because of passion or because they wanted to make a difference in the world? We would no longer have police, military, teachers, childcare, healthcare workers, firefighters, counselors, and so many other important jobs that don’t get paid nearly enough.

What Can We Do

My suggestion is instead of paying the top people like the CEO and other high business professionals really high amounts bring their pay down a little and give it out to workers. I just don’t understand how some careers can pay six figures while other careers can barely pay $50,000.

This is not a government problem, the government won’t help. Every time the government allocates money to go someplace the money gets used someplace else. The only way to close the divide is for people to help people.

Thank You

Thank you to everyone who is underpaid and overworked for everything that you do for your big hearts and your love for people.
