Overcoming the Odds
A Mexican Immigrant’s Journey to Success in US Software Engineering

As a Mexican immigrant who came to the United States to study software engineering, I know firsthand the challenges of trying to fit in and succeed in a field that is dominated by students from India and China. When I first arrived on campus, I felt like I was completely out of my element. I didn't know anyone, and I struggled to make friends and find my place in the social circles that seemed to be dominated by students from India and China.
One of the biggest challenges I faced was feeling like I didn't belong. I was constantly surrounded by students who seemed to have a much deeper understanding of the technical concepts we were learning in class, and who seemed to have an easier time navigating the social dynamics of college life. I often found myself feeling isolated and left out, and I struggled to find ways to connect with my classmates and make meaningful friendships.
But despite these challenges, I refused to give up. I knew that I had come too far and worked too hard to let these obstacles stand in my way. So I began to search for ways to overcome them. Here are the top ten strategies that I found most helpful:
1. Seek out resources and support from other Mexican immigrants who are studying software engineering. This can help you feel less alone and give you a sense of community and belonging.
2. Get involved in student organizations and clubs that are focused on software engineering. This can help you connect with other students who share your interests and passions, and it can help you build a network of supportive peers who can offer guidance and support.
3. Make an effort to get to know your classmates, regardless of their cultural background. Ask questions and seek to understand their experiences and perspectives. This can help you build stronger relationships and feel more connected to the people around you.
4. Find a mentor who can provide guidance and support. This can be a professor, a staff member, or an older student who has successfully navigated the challenges of studying software engineering as a Mexican immigrant.
5. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. If you're struggling with coursework, language barriers, or social isolation, don't be afraid to reach out for support. There are many resources available on campus to help you succeed.
6. Find ways to connect with other Mexican immigrants in your community. Whether it's through cultural events, language exchange programs, or social media groups, connecting with other Mexican immigrants can help you feel less isolated and give you a sense of community.
7. Take advantage of resources and support services offered by your college or university. Many schools offer tutoring, academic advising, and other resources to help students succeed. Don't be afraid to take advantage of these services if you need them.
8. Build a support network of friends, family, and mentors who can offer guidance and encouragement. Having a strong network of supportive people in your life can make all the difference when you're facing challenges.
9. Don't be afraid to ask for accommodations if you need them. If you're struggling with language barriers, for example, you may be able to request extra time on exams or other accommodations to help you succeed.
10. Above all, don't give up. It can be tough to navigate the challenges of studying software engineering as a Mexican immigrant, but by staying determined and focused, you can overcome these challenges and succeed.
By following these strategies, I was able to overcome the challenges I faced as a Mexican immigrant studying software engineering. I was able to find my place on campus, build meaningful friendships, and succeed academically. I believe that by adopting these strategies, other Mexican immigrants can do the same.
