National Teacher Appreciation Day 2025: Celebrating Our Everyday Heroes
One lesson at a time, paying tribute to the educators who shape our future

Let’s take a moment to recognize the individuals who shape minds, ignite curiosity, and dedicate themselves tirelessly day after day—our teachers. Today, Tuesday, May 6, 2025, the nation pauses to express two simple words: thank you.
Nestled within Teacher Appreciation Week, which spans from May 5 to May 9, this day isn't just another date on the calendar. It's a heartfelt reminder of the countless hours teachers invest in crafting lessons, mentoring students, and building the future one classroom at a time.
A Glimpse into the History of Teacher Appreciation Day
The journey to establish a day honoring teachers began in 1944 with Mattye White Woodridge, an Arkansas teacher who believed educators deserved national recognition. Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady, heard about her work and convinced Congress to recognize the day in 1953. The National Education Association (NEA) made it a full week in 1985, naming the first full week of May Teacher Appreciation Week. Originally, it was just one day.
