By Abdullahi AlabiPublished 2 years ago 4 min read

A healthy digestive system depends on different types of factors. A healthy diet, physical activity, and satiating mental health contribute to a healthy digestive system.

Mucus in stool refers to the presence of a thick jelly-like or slimy substance in faeces. Mucus acts as a protective layer in the digestive tract and a small amount in stools is normal . However its excess amount in stool may indicate an underlying problem and should not be ignored especially when mixed with blood . It should be evaluated by a adult/pediatric gastroenterologist. It can have various causes, including gastrointestinal issues such as infections, inflammation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS),Solitary rectal ulcer or IBD ( Ulcerative colitis / Crohn’s ).

Mucus in stool happens due to digestive issues, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s Disease, or Ulcerative Colitis (UC). Various other signs that need immediate medical attention are:

Bloody or pus-filled stools.

Stomachache or bloating.

Sudden changes in bowel movement.

Pain abdomen or bloating.

Nocturnal diarrhea

Causes of Mucus in Stool

Crohn’s disease- a medical issue leading to inflammation from the mouth to the anus is known as Crohn’s Disease. The disease is also termed as a form of IBD. It causes inflammation and thickening of Mucosal lining, leading to secretion of excess mucus.

It can be identified by signs such as weight loss , pain abdomen , loose bowel movements, bloody stools . It happens due to the overreaction of the immune system , when the mucus membrane of the small or large intestine becomes inflamed thickened . It can lead to painful ulcers with passage of high amount of mucus while defecating. The ulcers can be filled with pus and blood as well.

One may also experience different other symptoms such as rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, constipation, disturbance in bowel movements, urgent need for bowel movements, and various similar signs. In case of such signs and symptoms, it is necessary to get professional medical help to avoid worsening the situation.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) – One of the highest forms of irritating digestive issues is IBS. People suffering from IBS have visible white mucus in their stool. One may also experience other health issues such as stomach ache, constipation, and diarrhoea. One may also experience signs such as bloating and a disturbed bowel movement.

Proctitis– It is a medical issue in which the inflammation of the lining of the rectum lasts for a shorter or longer period. It can be identified by a repetitive urge to pass stools. It can also be identified by the visibility of faecal mucus and pus passing from the rectum. A doctor should immediately consult such medical issues to know the root cause and get timely treatment. Food Allergies or Sensitivities- Certain food intolerances or allergies can trigger excess mucus production.

Gastrointestinal Disorders- Conditions such as diverticulitis or colorectal polyps can lead to mucus in stool.

Constipation- Straining during bowel movements due to constipation can irritate the intestinal lining, causing mucus to appear.

Haemorrhoids- Inflammed haemorrhoids can result in mucus discharge along with blood.

Symptoms of Mucus in Stool

Mentioned below are some of the health signs and indications that can indicate the initial stages of the presence of mucus in stool:

White jelly-like substance in stools

Bloody or pus-filled stools

Abdominal pain

A feeling of passing stools repetitively

Acid reflux

Burning sensation in the throat

Different-coloured stools

Treatment Options for Mucus in Stool

Treatment for mucus while passing stools depends on the type of issue faced by a patient and the severity of the issue. Mentioned below are a few general treatment options that can help lower the visibility of mucus while passing stools:

Increase Water Intake– Dehydration and constipation are the biggest causes of mucus passing through stools. Hence, high water intake helps to get rid of these health issues. High water intake also helps to lower the inflammation of the body and lower the possibility of breaking mucus membranes and leaving the body through stools.

High-Fibre Foods– Consumption of high-fibre foods helps improve the mucus barrier in an individual. Hence, the level of mucus lowers gradually, making one feel better. A diet high in fibre and low in sugar helps to improve the digestion system and promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria in the body. Such a diet also helps to reduce inflammation of the body and keep the mucus membrane protected from any damage.
