1.1 Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

A UAV, an abbreviation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, sometimes also referred as Unpiloted Aerial Vehicle is a self-powered flying object with no human pilot. These vehicles find their immense applications in several fields, among them military and surveillance are of significant importance.

In the most recent couple of decades fast improvement has been completed in multi- mission proficient, small unmanned aerial vehicles. They are picking up significance because of their capacity to replace manned aerial vehicles in standard and additionally hazardous missions, which thus diminish expenses of numerous aerial operations.

1.2 Quadcopter

A Quad Copter is a four-rotor helicopter. It is an under-actuated, dynamic vehicle with four input forces (one for each rotor) and six degrees of freedom (6DOF). Unlike regular helicopters that have variable pitch angle rotors, a quad copter has four fixed- 6 pitch and fixed-angle rotors. The motion of a Quad copter in 6DOF is controlled by varying the rpm of the four rotors individually, thereby changing the lift & rotational forces. Quad copter tilts toward the direction of slow spinning motor, which enables it to roll and pitch. Roll and pitch angles divides the thrust into two directions due to which linear motion is achieved. The rotors rotate in clockwise- anticlockwise pairs, to control the yaw produced due to the drag force on propellers. The center of gravity (CG) lies almost at the same plane which contains all the rotors. Also, all four motors of same class differ in efficiency with each other. This differentiates it from helicopters and it is very difficult to stabilize a quad copter by human control.

Therefore, a sophisticated control is essential for a balanced flight of quad copter. The goal of this project is to build an UAV in structure of x shaped quad rotor that houses a camera with a wireless transmission system. This unmanned aerial vehicle will be used for campus surveillance. Aerial surveillance will be done by monitoring the real time environment with help of UAV. Surveillance of banks, highly crowded areas, aerial traffic and security watch can be easily done with the help of this.

In this section, in the course of market analysis, it was revealed that there is a need in the market for the development of this system, which serves to study the laws of management and their practical implementation. The main competitors and the high competitiveness of the developed system were also identified.

These are just small descriptions of the Quadcopter, there are so many mathematical and technical derivatives to achieve the proper drone model to work.

The objective of this project is to achieve the altitude control of a Quadcopter. This dissertation expounds on kinematics and dynamics of Quadcopter. It states modifications in the mechanical structure of an airframe and suggests a suitable mathematical model for the system.
