By Naomi OdiasePublished 3 years ago 3 min read

"From smartphones to social media, Gen Z has grown up in a world that's vastly different from the one their parents knew. But what impact has this had on their values and beliefs?"

Gen Z, also known as the ¡Generation, is the demographic cohort born between the mid-1990s and the early 2010s. They are important because they are the first generation to grow up with the internet and social media, which has had a profound impact on their worldview and behavior.

Gen Z has grown up with technology as an integral part of their lives. They are the first generation to be "digital natives," meaning that some of them have never known a world without the internet, smartphones, and social media. This has led to a number of changes in their behavior, such as a preference for visual communication (e.g. emojis, memes) and a tendency to multitask across multiple devices.

Education and career :

Despite growing up during a time of economic uncertainty, Gen Z is optimistic about their future so they are more likely to pursue higher education than previous generations, but they are also more likely to question the value of a traditional college degree. They value practical skills and hands-on experience, and are more likely to pursue entrepreneurship and alternative career paths than previous generations. They value education and are willing to work hard to achieve their goals. They are also known for their entrepreneurial spirit, with many starting their own businesses at a young age.

Values and beliefs : Gen Z is known for their progressive values and commitment to social justice. They are more likely to support LGBTQ+ rights, racial equality, and environmentalism (not all of the Gen z’s support these) than previous generations . They also value authenticity and transparency, and are skeptical of traditional institutions such as government and corporations.

Communication: The younger generation prefers visual communication and uses emojis and memes to express themselves. They are also more likely to use social media and messaging apps to communicate than phone calls or face-to-face conversations.

Mental health: The generation is more open about mental health issues than previous generations and is more likely to seek help. They are also more likely to experience anxiety and depression due to the pressures of social media and the constant connectedness of digital life.

Relationships: Gen Z has diverse and fluid relationships, with a preference for casual dating and non-traditional relationship structures. They are more likely to use dating apps and social media to meet new people.

Entertainment: They consumes short-form media on mobile devices, with a preference for platforms like TikTok and Snapchat over longer-form content like TV shows and movies

Health and wellness: The youth prioritizes physical and mental health and wellness, with a focus on fitness, healthy eating, and alternative health practices like meditation and yoga.

Diversity and inclusion: The younger generation embraces diversity and inclusion, with a focus on representation and visibility for marginalized groups. They are more likely to challenge stereotypes and biases and to call out instances of discrimination and prejudice.

Travel: Generation Z prioritizes travel and experiences over material possessions. They are more likely to use technology to plan and book travel and to seek out unique and off-the-beaten-path destinations.

Money and finance: The younger generation is financially savvy and uses digital tools to manage their finances. They are more likely to prioritize saving and investing than previous generations.

Fashion and style: Young people have a unique and eclectic sense of fashion and style. They are more likely to mix and match different styles and trends and to shop at thrift stores and vintage shops. Most of the youth prefer wearing baggy clothing

Overall, the younger generation is heavily influenced by technology and social media. They are diverse, inclusive, and prioritize experiences over material possessions. They are also financially savvy, health-conscious, and have a unique sense of style. They are creative, diverse, and socially conscious, and they are using their skills and talents to make a positive difference in their communities and beyond. As they continue to shape the world around them, it will be interesting to see how these characteristics continue to evolve.
