Its ok to not be okay

Balance between noise and silence

By Malak MAAZPublished 10 months ago 2 min read

Part 2

Sillayic lay in bed at midnight, all alone. The clouds above were thundering like distant drums of war. The birds were deep in sleep, their silence merging with the stillness of the room. That silence—it wasn’t peaceful. It was devouring. It gnawed at courage, crushed zeal, and drowned devotion.

Outside, raindrops sang a haunting melody against the windowpane, whispering: keep living, there is no other way out. Inside, Sillayic’s mind nudged toward sleep—it’s healthy, it said. But the heart had a different voice: Look… the whole world is asleep, and here you are, worrying and wondering, waiting for something good to happen that never comes.

Suddenly, a tap on the shoulder.

“You’re awake tonight,” said a familiar voice.

It was the demon again.

“I was expecting you,” Sillayic whispered. “Come… sit. I could use your company.”

The demon sat beside him, eyes glowing faintly in the dark. “So, what are we discussing tonight, Sillayic? What’s eating away at you now?”

Sillayic exhaled slowly. “I’ve been thinking… is it okay to not be okay? Or is there some unwritten rule that we must always feel fine?”

The demon tilted his head. “And how are you feeling today?”

“Nothing,” Sillayic replied. “Just… empty. Like something inside has collapsed. The heart doesn’t want anything anymore. Every dream once held seems to have dissolved. The only reason Sillayic keeps breathing is because… well, his time hasn’t come yet.”

The demon leaned closer. “Where are you going with these thoughts?”

“Everywhere… and nowhere.”

“What?”

Sillayic tried to explain. “Some days, I want to go out, laugh with friends, visit clubs, buy expensive things—cars, branded shoes, make promises to people I love. Then, out of nowhere, something in me just wants to disappear. To escape this world. I want to run far, to a place untouched by society’s expectations. A world where no one lives… except silence.”

The demon nodded. “That’s okay. It’s okay to want both. To hang out, enjoy life, and also crave solitude. But the key, my friend, is balance. If you live only in isolation, you’ll eventually wonder what it’s like to share your life. And if you give all your time to others, clubs, and noise, you’ll miss the peace of being alone. Regret follows both extremes.”

Sillayic looked away. “So you’re saying happiness and sorrow both have their place?”

“Yes,” he said. “Each teaches us something. Happiness doesn’t last forever—but neither does sorrow. It’s okay to not be okay sometimes. You’re human. Don’t fight that.”

Sillayic nodded slowly. “Still, it’s hard to balance both.”

“Everything worthwhile is hard,” the demon replied. “But it gets easier when you stop surrounding yourself with negativity. Try to see the good in even the worst moments. There’s always a flicker of light, even in the darkest nights. That flicker, no matter how small, is worth chasing.”

There was a silence between them after that. A calm one this time.

Outside, the night was breaking. Faint light began to spread across the sky. The sun was on its way.

“I have to go to work,” Sillayic said quietly. “Will you come again tomorrow?”

The demon stood up, smiling gently. “Of course. I have nowhere else to go. I’m alone… just like you.”
