Passionate about practice and volunteer activities
When he first entered the university, Irvin was full of newness and curiosity about the new university life. He actively participated in class officer elections, and club interviews, and led a team to participate in scientific research competitions, but the results were not very satisfactory. Faced with all the difficulties, he regrouped and turned to his passion for social practice activities.
In the summer of his freshman year, Irvin, as a major youth, took the 90th anniversary of the university as an opportunity to contribute to the university. It would be both challenging and meaningful to interview 90 alumni on the 90th anniversary of the school's founding. With the initial idea, he soon devoted himself to this activity, and as the person in charge, he recruited students from ten colleges across the university to create the "Ten Colleges Joint Alumni Search Team".
The year 2019 is not only the 90th anniversary of Chongqing University but also the 70th anniversary of the founding of New China and the 100th anniversary of the May Fourth Movement. Based on these three numbers, the team recruited 100 students to visit 90 alumni and 70 members of the Chinese Communist Party in different parts of China, covering more than 20 provinces and cities. After the search, Irvin, as the main leader, worked with team members to compile the contents of the search into a 140,000-word commemorative book, and the practice team won the honor of being the only one of the top 30 teams in Chongqing University nationwide in 2019. "I think this activity is a kind of growth and metamorphosis for me, and on the occasion of the university's celebration, I deserve to take up the responsibility of major youth to tell major stories and pass on major spirits," Irvin said so.
During his four years in college, Irvin has also actively participated in various volunteer activities such as epidemic prevention and control, teaching, and large-scale events more than 50 times, with a total of more than 300 hours, and was awarded as one of the "Top Ten Youth Volunteers of Chongqing University". He has been practicing the volunteer activities he loves, carrying forward the volunteer spirit of "dedication, love, mutual help and progress" with practical actions, and striving to be a responsible and responsible youth.
Tough and hardworking to make up for his shortcomings in his studies
In his sophomore year, Irvin paid more attention to the balance between participation and study, and put more effort into his studies. From insisting on sitting in the first row in class to setting goals for himself and asking the teacher a question after every class. He has tried various learning styles and has come up with some techniques that work best for him.

Irvin got into the habit of waking up early to study in the morning through Chongqing University's "Morning Program. One day, Irvin went to the study room at 4:30 a.m. when it was still dark as ink and a fellow student who had been up all night studying was about to leave, and the chance encounter gave him a wonderful feeling that stuck with him ever since. Every effort will not be let down, every persistence will be rewarded, the first semester of his sophomore year, his grades soared from the bottom of the first year of freshman year to the first in the grade. Later on, he also kept his study as his top priority, and ranked No. 1 in his major for two consecutive years, with a total of 51 courses exceeding 90 points, and won scholarships eight times, which are all recognition of his efforts.
"Life is a practice of focus, where you focus, your life is where you are," Irvin recalls that the Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction Competition he participated in during his sophomore year left a very momentous impression on him, as it was this competition that allowed him to find a higher purpose and deeper meaning in his studies. When he first participated in the competition, he was a "white boy" who had neither a patent nor a published article. Although he did not get a good result in this competition, the concept of "green and low-carbon" and "sustainable development" was deeply implanted in his heart. In his subsequent study and research, he always keeps this concept in mind. At the same time, he was diligent in thinking and summarizing, applied the lessons learned from the last competition to the new one, and participated in the National Student Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction Competition again in 2021, finally winning the first prize.
Tackling difficulties and diving into scientific research experiments
"Scientific research, like life, is a process of continuous trial and error and spiral forward." No one can have smooth sailing on the road of scientific research, and experiments should be brave to trial and error.
Irvin encountered a lot of difficulties when he was first introduced to research. Fortunately, he did not let such failures affect him for too long. Instead, he organized his mood and set sail again, learned from his previous projects, proactively contacted and consulted his professional teachers, and did comprehensive research and program argumentation.
"The numbers in textbooks are more than just cold characters." Irvin believes that the research he is involved in is more of an in-depth study of a particular area of his profession. At first, the numbers in the textbook may be abstract and cold, but when I really work through several days and nights and finally come up with consistent results, I will deepen my understanding of these numbers. Behind the seemingly ordinary numbers, there are the fruits of the labor and wisdom of countless predecessors.
Irvin often thinks, "What are the most important qualities of a researcher?" He was not sure when he first came to research, but after a year and completing several research projects, he has a new insight: interest and diligence are the two most important points, interest is the driving force to keep trying and persisting, and diligence is the necessary preparation for accumulation, and the two complement each other to overcome those challenging research tasks. In addition, he always insists on the development and innovation of interdisciplinary crossover. He has cooperated with students from different majors such as material and electrical, published a total of 2 SCI papers and Chinese core papers, and applied for 13 national patents, 8 of which have been granted.
He has published 2 SCI papers and Chinese core papers and applied for 13 national patents, 8 of which have been granted.
Irvin has experienced setbacks and failures, but this has made him more resilient. in the future, he will continue to maintain a rigorous attitude in the field of scientific research, and the quality of diligence will be accompanied by the courage of not being afraid of failure, and he will go further and further on the road of "striving for excellence".
