AI has taken the internet by storm. ChatGPT is being used to create content faster, AI image creators like Dall-E and Midjourney are being used to create images faster, and even tools that use AI to create videos and other content.

Though I tutor now, I did work for a short time as a classroom teacher, so I know how many different things teachers have to do other than just preparing and teaching lessons and grading papers. Teachers often have to do other things in the school, plus they may have to meet with parents, or perform other duties. These all take up time, so any time teachers can save is helpful. That's where ChatGPT comes in.

So how can teachers use Chat GPT to create lesson plans, worksheets, activities, and tests? I’ll explain that in this article.

How to Create Lesson Plans Using Chat GPT

Creating a lesson plan with Chat GPT is easy — type in what you want to create a lesson plan for. For example, here’s what I got when I asked it to make a lesson plan for a lesson about French reflexive verbs:

Level: Intermediate/Advanced

Objective

To introduce and practice French reflexive verbs, and to provide students with the opportunity to use them in context.

Materials:

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Handouts with examples of reflexive verbs in French
  • Worksheet with practice exercises
  • Audio or video resources with examples of reflexive verbs in French

Procedure:

Introduction (10–15 minutes):

1. Begin the lesson by introducing the concept of reflexive verbs in French, explaining that they are verbs that require the reflexive pronoun to indicate that the subject is performing the action on themselves.

2. Write a few examples on the board, such as “se laver” (to wash oneself) and “se lever” (to get up).

3. Ask students if they have encountered reflexive verbs before, and if they can think of any examples in French or English.

Explanation and practice (30–40 minutes):

1. Distribute handouts with examples of reflexive verbs in French, and go over them with the class. Make sure to highlight the reflexive pronouns that are used with each verb.

2. Have students practice using reflexive verbs in context by giving them a worksheet with exercises that require them to fill in the blanks with the correct reflexive verb.

3. After students have completed the worksheet, go over the answers as a class, making sure to explain any errors or difficulties that arose during the exercise.

Extension activity (10–15 minutes):

1. To further reinforce the concept of reflexive verbs in French, play an audio or video resource that features examples of reflexive verbs in context.

2. Have students listen or watch the resource and take notes on any new reflexive verbs they encounter.

3. After the resource has finished, have students share the reflexive verbs they noted with the class and explain what they mean.

Conclusion (5–10 minutes):

1. Wrap up the lesson by reviewing the key points of reflexive verbs in French, and encourage students to continue practicing them in their own writing and speaking.

2. Ask students if they have any questions or if there are any reflexive verbs they would like to practice more.

Assessment:

1. Assess student understanding of French reflexive verbs by observing their participation in class discussions and exercises.

2. Check student work on the practice worksheet and provide feedback as needed.

3. Evaluate student ability to use reflexive verbs correctly in context by listening to their contributions during the extension activity.

You could then ask ChatGPT to create handouts with examples of reflexive verbs, and you’d get something like this:

Reflexive Verbs in French

Reflexive verbs in French are verbs that require the use of a reflexive pronoun to indicate that the subject is performing the action on themselves.

Examples:

se laver — to wash oneself

  • je me lave — I wash myself
  • tu te laves — you wash yourself
  • il/elle se lave — he/she washes himself/herself
  • nous nous lavons — we wash ourselves
  • vous vous lavez — you (pl.) wash yourselves
  • ils/elles se lavent — they wash themselves

se réveiller — to wake up

  • je me réveille — I wake up
  • tu te réveilles — you wake up
  • il/elle se réveille — he/she wakes up
  • nous nous réveillons — we wake up
  • vous vous réveillez — you (pl.) wake up
  • ils/elles se réveillent — they wake up

se maquiller — to put on makeup

  • je me maquille — I put on makeup
  • tu te maquilles — you put on makeup
  • il/elle se maquille — he/she puts on makeup
  • nous nous maquillons — we put on makeup
  • vous vous maquillez — you (pl.) put on makeup
  • ils/elles se maquillent — they put on makeup

And this is what I got when I asked it to create a worksheet for this lesson:

Reflexive verbs in French are verbs that indicate that the subject is performing the action on themselves. They are always accompanied by a reflexive pronoun that matches the subject of the sentence. Here’s a worksheet with fill-in-the-blank exercises to practice using reflexive verbs in French:

Answers:

me lave

te brosses

se maquille

nous reposons

vous dépêchez

se rasent

m’habille

te souviens

se promène

nous amusons

You could spruce up the worksheet with AI-created images or use images you find in Google Images or another free image source.

For the final part of the lesson, you could use a YouTube video with reflexive verbs in it or create an AI-generated video with a tool like Pictory.

How to Use ChatGPT To Create Tests

Finally, you can use ChatGPT to create a test to test your students’ knowledge of reflexive verbs. Here’s what I got when I asked ChatGPT to create a simple test:

Test your knowledge of French reflexive verbs with the following questions:

I could have asked ChatGPT to make this test more complex — maybe asked to include some fill-in-the-blank questions and multiple-choice questions.

That’s how teachers can use ChatGPT to create lesson plans, worksheets and tests easily. As you figure out how to use ChatGPT and the other AI tools available now, they’ll become indispensable — they’ll save you time so you can spend more time grading papers and working on your other duties as a classroom teacher.
