Getting the Right Fit with Your Product Labels

The ‘right’ fit with product labels is the fit you are happiest with

By Craig UptonPublished 3 years ago 2 min read

At the risk of jumping straight to the conclusion, the ‘right’ fit with product labels is the fit you are happiest with. Depending on what you are selling and whom you are selling it to, you may have entirely different requirements than another similar seller in your field.

Truth is much about the attractiveness and appeal of labels is subjective. Even so, there are a few basic tips and tricks of the trade that can help when you are looking to design labels that ‘pop’.

If you are struggling to come up with your next product label concept, try the following as a starting point:

  1. Consider Your Packaging

The shape and design of a product’s package will have a significant influence on the suitability and appropriateness of the available label options. But regardless of the shape of the package, it can be useful to think outside the box (pun intended).

Think about the most obvious place for your product label and consider putting it somewhere different. If the obvious place is the centre, consider a corner. If the obvious shape is a square or rectangle, consider an oblong or trapezoid. It needs to be something that suits the shape and dimensions of the packaging, but does not necessarily need to follow any normal conventions.

At least, not if looking to come up with something that really stands out.

2. Size Up the Surface Area

That said, going with conventions to at least some extent is advisable, where the size of your labels is concerned. There’s technically no such thing as the ‘correct’ size for a product label, but you also need to ensure it does not look overbearing or indecipherably small.

For products and packages that are particularly large, labels of a larger size make sense. With smaller items, smaller labels that do not dominate the package in its entirety are a better option.

It’s all about finding a happy medium – labels that get the job done and are proportionate to the package and at the same time let the product itself do the talking.

3. Try a Unique Shape

Back with label shape selection, you could always switch things up with your products with something completely unique. One of the benefits of working with a professional label printing company is the total freedom of choice it brings.

Irrespective of the size or type of labels you need, you can have them printed in absolutely any shape you can think of; something that reflects your brand, something indicative of the product in the packaging, or something completely abstract to differentiate your products from those of your competitors.

Getting creative with shapes can make it much easier to help products and packages of a fairly generic shape stand out from similar items.

4. Consider Multiple Labels

It is worth remembering that you do not have to choose just one label design and stick with it (pun again intended). A great way to make products and packages more eye-catching is to layer multiple labels together.

For example, you could have one main product label communicating the features of the item, accompanied by a second label outlining your commitment to sustainability and a third to remind customers of your ‘100% satisfaction guarantee’.

Rather than cramming all of this information onto one label, spreading it across multiple labels can be much more visually appealing. Not to mention, bring something unique to your products and your packaging, helping them catch the eye of prospective buyers.
