Are you a student? Have you ever found studying backbreaking? But you have to study because studying strengthens your brain’s development. A lot of students avoid studying as they do not find it interesting compare to other activities as a result they fail their exams. Research shows that more than 35% of students fail due to a loss of interest in their studies. Now the problem is that students preparing for the exams depends on the last week of their exams. They do not focus on their syllabus the whole year and start studying when the exams are near. They give more preference to continuous studying than effective studying.
Continuous and effective learning are two successful ways of studying. But there are some basic differences between them that many people do not observe. Some students believe that if they study continuously for a long period of time they will have more to retain but they do not think about the after-effects of this process on their brain and progress.
When we ask toppers about the struggle behind their success they usually tell us that they study for about 12 to 14 hours a day which is nearly impossible for an average student. Here question arises that which way of studying is better continuous or effective? Different people have different opinions about the ways of studying but we have to find a productive and successful way of studying to achieve our goals. Scientists researched that students studying effectively are more successful than students studying continuously. As we mentioned earlier that we all need a productive way of studying which is effective studying according to the researchers. In their latest research scientist mentioned some of the scientifically proven ways of studying better.
As It is scientifically proven that the human brain can concentrate on one thing only for 40 - 45 minutes, not more than that is the maximum limit, and can work continuously on a task for 3 – 4 hours after that the brain and body need rest for further working. So how a student can study continuously for 12-13 hours as his brain cannot concentrate for more than 45 minutes? Further analysis says that time does not matter in studying the point is which should be focused while learning is the amount of knowledge a student retains and for how much time. Generally, psychologists agree on the type of interval studying and that students should study closer to the day they learned the material than the day of the test. They also defined that when students just learned any material they retain up to 70% of that and when you will review the material within 24 hours. So after a week, you may retain 100% of the same information after only five minutes of review.
As generally while studying our brain functions more as compared to the rest state, and to function properly oxygen is needed, after every hour of studying we should take rest and relax for a while because stress hinders learning. UC Irvine researchers find that stress lasting for a couple of hours can engage corticotropin-releasing hormones that disrupt the process of creating and storing memories. Taking study breaks to exercise or drawing a few deep breaths will help your studying and lower your stress level.
Scientists researched many ways of studying and find some of them interesting to engage students towards studying which will help them to be more creative instead of making them feel dull. By following the way of effective learning educators can be more productive. Schools colleges and universities should promote this way of learning rather than teaching them to cram for examinations. Students usually believe that they should only study for the time of examination, as they start studying their whole syllabus of the year one week before the exams! It is definitely impossible for an average student to learn the syllabus in one night which he couldn’t memorize in a year. We should eliminate the system of cramming from our educational systems because students are not understanding what they are learning, they are only memorizing it for a short period of time, and after they can not make use of it.
As saying “Do little but effective and put that together to overwhelm the world”.
