Building Relationships That Last, part 2

True love is unconditional, rooted in the essence of a person, not their achievements or appearance. It's a love that endures through life's storms, a love that sees beyond the surface.

### Unconditional Love: Building Relationships That Last

True love has no reason. When you add reasons to love, you create conditions, and conditions lead to expectations. Expectations, when unmet, lead to disappointment. To cultivate lasting relationships, it's crucial to understand the concept of loving without reason.

**Biblical Foundation: Unconditional Love**

In the Bible, God’s love is described as unconditional. John 3:16 tells us, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son." There is no explanation or condition attached to God’s love. He loves us simply because He chooses to. From Genesis to Revelation, nowhere does God provide a reason for His love.

**The Dangers of Conditional Love**

When love is based on specific reasons, it becomes fragile. For example, if you love someone because of their appearance, job, or any other specific trait, what happens when those traits change? A good job can be lost, looks can fade, and circumstances can alter.

**Expectation and Disappointment**

Expectation is the root of disappointment. If you expect your partner to always cook for you, iron your clothes, or meet any other specific need, you set yourself up for disappointment when those expectations are not met. Instead, approach each act of love with gratitude, recognizing it as a gift rather than a right.

**Self-Reliance and Gratitude**

A healthy relationship is built on mutual respect and self-reliance. Instead of expecting your partner to fulfill specific roles, be prepared to take care of yourself. When your partner does something kind, express gratitude.

**The Power of Unconditional Love**

Loving without conditions means there is nothing your partner can do to stop you from loving them. This kind of love is powerful and enduring. Romans 5:8 illustrates this beautifully: "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." God loves us despite our flaws and mistakes, and we should strive to love others in the same way.

**Healing Through Unconditional Love**

Unconditional love can heal wounds and mend broken relationships. When we love others without expecting anything in return, we free ourselves and others from the burden of conditions.

**Practical Steps to Unconditional Love**

1. **Reflect on Your Reasons**: Make a list of all the reasons you love the people in your life, including your spouse. Then, consciously decide to let go of those reasons. This symbolic act can help you move towards unconditional love.

2. **Practice Self-Love**: Love yourself without reasons. Understand your worth and value independent of others’ opinions. This self-love will enable you to love others more freely.

3. **Reduce Expectations**: Lower your expectations to minimize disappointment. Be grateful for every kind act and gesture, recognizing it as a gift.

4. **Forgive and Let Go**: Forgive those who have hurt you and let go of past grievances. This act of forgiveness is crucial in moving towards unconditional love.

**Inspirational Bible Verses:**

1. **John 3:16**: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son."

2. **Romans 5:8**: "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

**Prayer:**

Father, forgive us for attaching conditions to our love. Help us to love others as you love us, unconditionally and without reason. Teach us to remove our expectations and to appreciate each act of kindness. Heal our hearts and mend our relationships. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Thank you for reading and may your relationships be blessed with unconditional love.
