It's me, Brittnei C.

I found when I started as a grant writer, free information is readily available, but unpredictable - the information is always it’s always in bits and pieces or repeated information. It's no surprise that you have to get your Sherlock Holmes on to seek more. My goal is to give you grant information right now RIGHT NOW!!

Bonus: How Did You Start Brittnei C. ?

I started with the bonus first because I didn't want to save it for last. I "volunteered as the tribute" to understand grants better and know what it takes to be a grant writer. At the free level I constantly hit brick walls, but I was determined to break through - part of it is my background as a paralegal. I got rejected more times than I can count.

How Do I Get Started?

First, pick a grant niche - it could be anything, but, more specifically, make sure it's something you like doing and knowledgeable about. Next, is writing - write a fake grant there are tons of empty grant templates online. This sounds strange, but this works to build your writing confidence and overtime you'll get funded.

Video Transcription: The first question I often get it for new and emerging grant writers. “What advice do I have for breaking into the industry if grant writing?” It’s like “finding a needle in a haystack” sometimes, but other times it’s quite simple. What I did was put myself out there. I casted my net far and wide. I reached out to funders, I reached out to different organizations personally, I reached out to anyone who would have a grant writing program, however, I got a lot of no’s, so don’t let the “no” stop you from getting to where you want.

Where Do I Volunteer?

It's not popular, but volunteering pro-bono is where I started. Free positions often lead to paid positions in the future. This is how you build and expand your network. At volunteermatch.org Nonprofit Leaders are always looking for grant writers. Start building our track record.

Paid volunteer positions available and they are based on experience. Most start at 125$ per grant weather you get funded or not.

Video Transcription: Which is a lead into the first one (Getting Started) I’m not trying to sound too vague, but casting your net far and wide – just to see what you're going to get and who is willing to work with you. I was fortunate to come in as a volunteer for M.E.N. Incorporated and M.E.N. is an acronym for Mentoring, Educating and Nurturing. What their organization does counseling, therapy for men of different demographics and background, between the ages of 8 – 25. They council any one in that demographic who needs help. If they are facing homelessness and the like or if they just need someone to talk to, that’s what their organization provides and as a grant writer, I help them get funded so they can continue on providing those services to those young men who really do need it.
