Lucknow District and Lucknow Division have their administrative headquarters in this metropolitan. With a population of about 2.8 million people, the city is sprawled across both sides of the River Gomti, covering an area of 350 square kilometres. The city of Lucknow accounts for 6.33 percent of the state's urban population. The city is well-known for its historical significance and is also identified as the seat of the Nawabs. The city is presently one of India's fastest developing cities, and it is quickly establishing itself as a commercial and shopping centre. Lucknow is known as the "Golden City of the East" because it is the capital city, the seat of government, and a commerce hub for adjacent villages.

Historical background

Avadh is claimed to be among the most ancient of Hindu states. According to popular legend, Ramchandra of Ayodhya, the hero of the Ramayana, gifted the territory of Lucknow to his devoted brother Lakshman after he had conquered Sri Lanka and completed his term of exile in the jungle. Therefore, people say that the original name of Lucknow was Lakshmanpur, popularly known as Lakhanpur or Lachmanpur.

The ancient history of Lucknow is mired in mysteries and folk sayings and probably derives its name from Lakshman . Rama ordered Lakshmana to establish a town near at the present site of Lakshman Tila. Lucknow Is well connected and with its adjoining districts forms the core of this rich agricultural region, and is flanked by river Gomti.
