A Tale of Life: A Tale of Water's Gift

Life without Water is no Life

By Olusola OgunlanaPublished about a year ago 5 min read

In the heart of the ancient land of Eldoria, where golden fields stretched far and mountains kissed the sky, a small village named Nymara thrived beside a sparkling river. The river, known as Elara’s Vein, was the lifeblood of the land, nourishing the soil, quenching thirsts, and whispering secrets of time to those who listened.

But the people of Nymara had long forgotten the river’s value. As generations passed, they took its presence for granted. Water flowed endlessly, or so they believed, and wastefulness became second nature. Buckets were spilled carelessly, fields were flooded unnecessarily, and the once crystal-clear waters of Elara’s Vein grew murky with neglect.

The Drying River

One fateful summer, a great drought struck Eldoria. The sun burned fiercely, and the winds carried away the moisture from the land. The mighty river that had once flowed without end began to shrink. Day by day, its banks receded, revealing cracked earth beneath. The villagers noticed, but they believed the river would return to its former glory as it always had.

But Elara’s Vein did not recover.

By the time the people realized the gravity of the situation, it was too late. Wells ran dry, crops withered, and livestock perished. People traveled miles for a mere sip of water, and sickness spread as the remaining puddles turned stagnant. The once-thriving village faced despair, and murmurs of abandoning their home grew louder.

Among them was a young girl named Lyra, the daughter of the village’s elder. Unlike the others, Lyra had always listened to the river’s whispers, sitting by its edge, watching the ripples dance under the moonlight. She understood that the river was alive, that it gave life, and that it could also take it away.

One night, as she sat beside the dwindling stream, she heard a voice—a deep, resonant murmur that seemed to rise from the water itself.

"Water is life, but life forgets water."

Lyra's eyes widened. "Who speaks?" she asked, peering into the shimmering surface.

The water stirred, and from its depths, a figure emerged—a being of liquid and light, flowing yet solid, shimmering with the essence of the river itself. "I am the Guardian of Elara’s Vein," it said. "Long have I watched over this land, giving without question. But your people have forgotten the sacred bond between water and life."

Lyra felt a pang of guilt. She had seen the wastefulness, the neglect, and now she understood the price. "Is there a way to restore the river?" she asked.

The Guardian’s form wavered like a disturbed pond. "Only if the people of Nymara remember the truth: Water is not infinite. It is to be respected, cherished, and protected."

The Journey for Water’s Wisdom

Determined to save her home, Lyra set out on a journey to discover the secrets of water. The Guardian told her of the Three Wells of Wisdom, hidden across Eldoria, each holding a lesson that would guide her people back to harmony with water.

The Well of Scarcity

Her first stop was the Well of Scarcity, hidden in the barren sands of the Drylands. There, she met a nomadic tribe who had survived generations with only a trickle of water. She watched as they used every drop with care, collecting morning dew, recycling water from cooking, and never wasting a single sip.

"Water is precious," an elder told her. "We do not waste it because we know what it means to be without it."

Lyra realized that her people had never known true scarcity, which had made them careless. She carried this lesson in her heart as she journeyed to the next well.

The Well of Purity

The second well lay deep within the Emerald Forest. When she arrived, she saw clear water tainted by pollution, fallen leaves, rotting wood, and oily substances floated atop it. A wise healer of the forest explained, "Water gives life, but when it is impure, it brings sickness. If we do not protect its purity, it will no longer sustain us."

Lyra thought of the once-clear waters of Elara’s Vein, now dark and filled with filth. She vowed that her people would learn to protect the river, keeping it clean and sacred.

The Well of Renewal

The final well sat high in the Misty Peaks, where clouds kissed the mountaintops. There, she met an old woman who showed her how water cycled through the land—rising as mist, falling as rain, and flowing back to the rivers. "Water can return," the woman said, "but only if we give it time and care. When we take too much and give nothing back, the cycle breaks."

With the wisdom of the Three Wells, Lyra returned to Nymara, ready to save her village.

Restoring the River

Lyra gathered the villagers and shared the lessons she had learned. "We have abused the gift of water," she declared. "We wasted it without thought, dirtied it without care, and took it for granted. But we can change."

She led them in efforts to conserve every drop—using only what they needed, collecting rainwater, and treating the river with respect. Together, they cleaned the waters, removing debris and pollutants. They planted trees along the riverbanks to keep the soil from eroding, allowing the water to flow freely once more.

Days turned into weeks, and the river responded. Slowly, the water returned, clearer and stronger. The crops began to grow again, the wells refilled, and the village flourished once more.

One night, as Lyra stood by the river, the Guardian appeared once more, its form now radiant with the river’s renewal.

"You have remembered, and so the water flows again."

Lyra bowed her head in gratitude. "We will never forget again."

The Everlasting Lesson

From that day forward, the people of Nymara honored water as the gift of life. They taught their children the lessons of the Three Wells and made a vow never to take water for granted again.

And so, Elara’s Vein continued to flow, a reminder that water is life’s greatest treasure—one that must always be protected, cherished, and respected.

Moral of the Story:

Water is the essence of life, yet many fail to see its true value until it is gone. By conserving, purifying, and respecting water, we ensure a future where life continues to thrive. Let us never forget the lessons of the Three Wells, for in them lies the key to survival.
