Thinking positively, acting purposefully, and building solid relationships with others are essential for our happiness and success. We have influence over each of these areas, which is fantastic news. We can choose to change.
The most frequent changes that can have the biggest effects on your life are as follows and the good news is that you can start implementing them all right away:
1. Never compare.
Your efforts should have a true purpose. Focusing on impact and contribution while avoiding comparison to others is a great technique to overcome comparison.
Over time, I came to realize that, as a working mother, my worth was not determined by how much I volunteered at my sons' schools in comparison to other mothers. I didn't compare myself to other women who had more free time for volunteering; instead, I focused on how our sons were doing and if they were prospering.
There will always be somebody who is more successful, more accomplished, has more awards, money, and a better job. You probably won't measure up because of this ongoing comparison game. Always rising up, the bar is typically seen. Consequently, set your own standards of success based on what is important to you, where you started, and how far you have come.
2. Try something fresh each week.
Our routines and predictable days keep us in a rut. Choose a new, minor change you want to implement each week.
"A year of living differently," declared a friend of mine. She improved her home, arranged a few quick weekend getaways, learned to fly fish, and took cooking classes.
Make a conscious effort to change things up and try something new. Even a minor adjustment, like trying a new meal item on the grill or viewing an engaging TED Talk while getting ready in the morning, can spark new enthusiasm.
3. Fight the need to always be correct.
Even the strongest relationship can be compromised by the need to constantly be right. Although it frequently comes at the expense of someone or something else, doing what is right at all costs may satisfy an inner desire you have.
Think about the following scenario: Is there only one solution? Do we really need to agree? Is there any fresh information presented here that I haven't thought about?
Of course, maintain your viewpoint and stand up for the principles and causes that are important. A shift could be beneficial if your need to be correct, regardless of the significance or relationship of the circumstance, overcomes you. "Winning the battle but losing the war" is not a happy outcome.
4. Distinguish between your feelings and your actions.
Spend some time recognizing your true emotions. Keeping your emotions hidden or unacknowledged is hardly the definition of minding your own business. However, keep in mind that your acts are a separate decision from your sentiments.
I may identify my displeasure, for instance, and then determine on my own how to manage it if a peer is making it challenging for me to collaborate with them on a project. Or perhaps you become upset because a friend consistently breaks obligations.
Make the decision to be honest and up front about the effect your actions are having on the friendship rather than ignoring it or breaking up with me. You alone decide how you will act on the basis of your sentiments, and that decision is separate.
5. Despite your need to speak, listen.
The most effective tool you have for learning and establishing relationships is listening, but it is incredibly underused in our fast-paced, technologically-driven society.
Instead of planning your next move, ask questions and pay attention to what is being said. One of the most valuable compliments you can pay someone is your undivided attention.
6. Remain mindful.
Feelings are influenced by your thinking. Your behavior is dictated by how you feel.
If your thoughts are negative and loaded with criticism of yourself, it is impossible to be confident and self-assured. You can alter your language if you would never speak to someone else the way you speak to yourself.
