6 Tips for Writing an MBA Application

Getting into business school requires dedication, and it can be filled with uncertainty. Schools are adjusting to global events, including the pandemic, which may make the MBA application process even more difficult.

Over the past 20 years, I have been actively involved in the MBA admissions industry, and during this time, I have seen a great deal of change. When I was preparing for my MBA application, I followed the advice that has remained true throughout my career:

1. Take your academics seriously

Do not forget that the MBA is an academic degree, not a professional one. The academic record is an important part of the admissions process, so make sure you pay close attention to it. It is important that you fill in any gaps in your undergraduate grade point average or individual quantitative class grades. Make sure that you educate yourself about accounting, statistics, and introductory finance through the local community college or online sources that are reputable. It does not matter how well you do in the class as long as you get an A, you can submit a transcript with your application.

2. Engage in formal preparation for the GMAT or GRE

As of the present, there is no specific timeline for when admissions policies that do not require standardized testing will be in place by the majority of schools. Furthermore, consultants and financiers often request test scores from applicants who have obtained their MBAs after they have obtained their degrees. The best thing you can do is be prepared for an interview with more than just your score, but with the best score possible in order to display your analytical skills.

3. Choose recommenders wisely

It is the current or former managers of a company who are professionals who make the best recommendations. It is highly recommended that if you are looking for references from people you know well, you should not rely on "autographs" from leaders who may have had only a few interactions with you. It is typical that former professors, family friends, and relatives are not able to serve as MBA recommendations.

4. Know your “why”

In comparison to most other graduate programs, the MBA application process is different. It is important to note that during the application process, the application committee will not only ask you for evidence of your academic and professional skills, but it will also ask you why you are interested in an MBA.

5. Stay flexible on your “how”

There can be a challenge to maintain the balance, but you can add an element of flexibility on top of all that I said above. There is also the possibility that your career path may go in a direction other than what you had expected. There may be a case where a school you have dreamed of since childhood may no longer be able to cater to your needs, such as recruiting connections, teaching methodologies, or scholarship opportunities. There is no sense in letting opportunities pass you by that are probably perfect for you simply because they aren't what you had originally planned.

6. Seek reliable advice

There is a difference between expertise and opinion. Learn from applications to top MBA programs based on first-hand experience from those with firsthand knowledge of the process. If you talk to MBA alumni or current students, you will be able to learn more about the MBA experience and how it could enhance your career. If you do not know anyone in your schools, ask them to introduce you. The best advice I can give you is to listen to the people who have been on the other side of the admissions decision. People who build great applications for you are the only ones who know what they're doing exactly because they're the ones who do it.

MBA programs are rare academic programs that can enhance your intellect, boost your career, and lead you to self-discovery. You must prepare hard to be accepted into MBA programs. When you have the right information, and the right community around you, you can determine your “how” and “why” on the way to admittance.
