Preparing for an interview can feel stressful and nerve-wracking, with thoughts all over the place. You might wonder if the interviewer will like you, whether you’ll say the right things, or if you'll forget to mention something important. This is especially true for online interviews, where “branding” yourself is key, and it’s essential to use body language to show your interest. Communicating virtually means focusing more on your facial expressions and tone, as body language is often limited to upper-body gestures. Eye contact can be tricky because you’re usually looking at a camera rather than directly at the interviewer.

After attending many interviews, both online and offline, I’ve found online interviews to be more beneficial for me because I have control over my environment. Offline interviews, on the other hand, take place in the company’s office, which can give a more direct sense of the work environment and culture.

Therefore, an online job interview doesn’t have to be stressful. Just following a few simple steps can help you feel confident and ready to make a great impression.

Here’s how to prep:

1. Test Your Technology: Before the interview, make sure your internet, webcam, and microphone are all working. Check the platform (Zoom, Teams, etc.) to avoid any hiccups. Because you don't want to show the employer that you can't be a reliability.

2. Pick a Good Spot: Find a quiet place. A neutral background is ideal, so you don’t distract your interviewer with a messy room or a bunch of random items behind you or random people joining your interview.

3. Present yourself nicely: Even though you're at home, dress like you're going to the office. It doesn’t have to be super formal, but looking professional is a must.

4. Have Your Stuff Ready: Keep your resume, portfolio, and any notes you might need nearby so you can reference them easily if needed. It’ll keep you organised and calm.

5. Know the Company: A little research about the company and the role can go a long way. Make sure you know their mission, values, and any recent news so you can show you’re genuinely interested.

6. Practice Your Answers: Think about common questions you might get asked and practice how you'd respond. You don’t need to memorize answers, but being prepared will help you stay calm.

7. Look at the Camera: It’s tempting to look at the screen, but make sure you’re looking into the camera. This helps you seem more engaged and connected to the interviewer.

8. Ask Questions: When they ask if you have any questions, have a couple ready. It shows you’re not just interested in getting the job, but that you're thinking about how you'd fit into the company.

9. Mind Your Body Language: Sit up straight, nod when you agree with something, and avoid getting distracted. Your body language is just as important online as in person.

10. Follow Up: Don’t forget to send a thank-you note afterward. A quick message showing appreciation and reinforcing why you’re a good fit can make a big difference.

Since interviewing online will work differently with having an interview in person your first impressions will make a lot of difference to make interviewer feel impressed by you.

With these tips, you’ll feel more prepared, calm, and ready to nail your online interview!
