It's 6 AM. The first thought that crosses your mind is answering nature's call. For some that might be the second unavoidable task of the day. But what about the first one?
Well, well. The first one is probably catching on to the morning paper which has just been delivered by the vendor. After you have stripped off the paper by unfolding the rubber band it's time to read. Have you forgotten an accessory you need along with the paper?
Yes. It's morning tea. The feel of the paper in your fingers and the sip of the tea is all that you want. Whether you are reading about the Russian- Ukrainian conflict or solving a crossword, you have the world in front of you.
Your wife might be summoning you to help her in the kitchen. Everything goes for a wait. Until you have had a feel of what happened worldwide last day.
After you have opened up your mind to the latest news you may further worry about the omelet which you will have in your breakfast.
While you are reading the newspaper nothing worries you. After having your pre-breakfast session you start to look at the watch. The thought of reaching your office in time starts to bother you.
It's not just a part of rituals in homes. Just wonder if you must have seen old men going through the newspapers while they are enjoying a game of test cricket at Lords. Maybe some might be enjoying a cup of coffee. Others might be having a beer.
It's a part and companion of the journey when you are seated in a train and traversing from one place to another.
It's also an important ingredient while you are sipping a cup of coffee at a coffee house. Those people who have retired and do not have much to do in their homes discuss the news while reading the paper. They spend their whole day in the coffee home enjoying each other's company and of course the company of the newspaper. For a moment it looks as if some self-imposed journalists are discussing world news and thinking about what next to publish in the next morning newspaper.
It's true that for any ritual to survive it has to be accepted by the young generation. However, the younger generation is much more inclined to fast news. They are less interested in the news one day back. For them what matters is what happened in the last hour.
They are dependent on Instagram and Twitter for their latest news.
Our future generations might have a glimpse of the newspaper in photos. They would probably download a much-advanced version of the E-paper and read it for a few minutes. Probably they might have only that much time to spare to see what is happening in the outside world.
Information will be disseminated anyhow. Maybe at a much faster rate. But the feel of the morning paper would be gone. The freshness of the front page would no more be a part of our system.
Hey! Morning paper. Please continue to guide us. You and morning tea are inseparable. They are part of our journey of life. For they let us get motivated to start a day afresh.
You are the most well-researched medium of the news for the readers. You don't care just about breaking news. Even the news which is not a breaking news matter to you. For some, even those small news might have a lot of purpose in their life.
As a part of the present generation would never like to say RIP morning paper!
