The global average temperature has increased by approximately 1.2°C compared to pre-industrial levels, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Although this rise may seem minor, it has already led to significant changes in the climate system. The use of fossil fuels in industry, transportation, and energy production is the largest source of CO2 emissions. CO2 is the main greenhouse gas responsible for global warming, as it traps heat in the atmosphere, preventing it from escaping into space.

2. Deforestation

Deforestation for agriculture or construction also contributes to climate change. Forests absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and convert it into biomass through photosynthesis. When forests are destroyed, this CO2 is no longer absorbed and continues to accumulate in the atmosphere.

3. Agricultural and Livestock Activities

Agricultural activities, particularly livestock farming, release large amounts of methane (CH4), a greenhouse gas that is much more potent than CO2. Additionally, the use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture generates nitrous oxide (N2O), another powerful greenhouse gas.

Furthermore, climate change leads to crop failures, threatening food security and causing serious health issues, including the spread of infectious diseases.

Solutions to Mitigate Climate Change

To mitigate the impacts of climate change, decisive action is needed at both national and international levels. Solutions include reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting and restoring forests, transitioning to renewable energy sources, and changing human behaviors.

1. Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is the most critical goal in the fight against climate change. Nations must fulfill their commitments to reduce emissions by transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower. Improving energy efficiency, developing clean technologies, and increasing the use of renewable energy are necessary measures to achieve this goal.

2. Protecting and Restoring Forests

Protecting and restoring forests is one of the most effective ways to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere. Large-scale reforestation and the protection of old-growth forests need to be implemented. Additionally, preventing deforestation and cracking down on illegal logging are essential to safeguarding critical forest ecosystems.

3. Transitioning to Renewable Energy

Transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources is an indispensable part of mitigating climate change. Solar and wind energy have become cost-competitive with fossil fuels. Countries need to make substantial investments in developing renewable energy infrastructure and promoting the use of clean technologies through supportive policies.

Individuals also play a crucial role in mitigating climate change. Lifestyle changes such as reducing energy consumption, using public transportation, and cutting down on plastic use can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, raising public awareness about climate change and encouraging environmental action are necessary to drive sustainable change.
