Your Future Self is Watching
The Quiet Consequences of Today’s Choices

When sitting in a quiet setting like at home when the lights go off, or in an office where I have to wait for a long while, or simply on a long trip when the noise settles in the bus. I often reflect on how I got this far. The decisions which led me here, the fortunate and unfortunate events which shaped this moment, and how all this could have been different if certain things didn’t happen. I also imagine how different my life would have been if I had made some other choices. For better or worse, I’ll never really know how things could have turned out. All I can do is assume they turned out for the best.
Its amazing how things turned out looking back at all the decisions I made, maybe things for me personally are not that terrible but how about you? All the times I refused to study, the times I chose to go out with friends until late at night, the extra drinks I took to prove that I was a man without mentioning all my financial mishaps. Not only that, but the right calls I made, the opportunities I didn’t miss, and my determination to push forward no matter the difficulties. Personally, when I look back at myself, I am happy about what I’ve become, I’ll gladly give my younger self a thumbs up.
Every single choice shapes your future
They might seem quite small and inconsequential, but you have to understand that every single choice you make eventually shapes your future, not just that but also unforeseen events do as well. There are things which happen to you which are beyond your control and can dramatically impact your life. It really doesn’t even matter to talk about those because they are out of our control but not everything is. There are many choices we make which have as much of an impact. One very striking example of this is how much my life would have been if I wasn’t surrounded by friends who pushed me to study in high school. Today I find great pleasure in studying, and I even became a writer online, but I could have easily hated books and education. I know people who can’t even go through a 2-page document without yawning.
Just that decision alone (with credit to all my friends) has had the most impact in my life more than anything else. At the moment it didn’t look as much, I was just concerned with passing my exams but looking at it now I am so thankful. There are so many other choices I could delve into, things like; not smoking, being in shape, learning communication, persistence, discipline etc. but I think you get the point.
What will your future self think
Your life is certainly not over yet, ask yourself what your future self would think about what you are doing right now? Are you making things better for him or worse?
You are either building your future self for gratitude or regrets because he will either benefit from the choices you make or fall victim to them.
The choices of today could feel good at the moment; drinking to your heart's content or dating as many women as you can, and many people often times don’t consider how this will impact their future selves, but I really think you should.
No matter who you are, your life is the result of the foresight of so many other people, whether its the government which took the time to build a conducive environment for you to grow up in, or your parents who gathered the resources to bring you up. Your presence here is a testament to the good choices not only you made, but also so many others who came before you. In the same way, they could have only been worried about themselves and what was good for their present, but they took the time to worry about your future self even before you existed. Don’t you think it would be a waste to throw your future away?
I’m not even judging whatever you might be doing at the moment, all I want is for you to consider what you would think when you look back at this very moment in time. Will you be happy you at least had fun in your youth, or would you be regretful you didn’t do as much as you hoped for? Either ways, it's up to you, the future isn’t that far and in no time it's upon us.
Conclusion
When you will look back at this moment in the near and far away future, it should be one you are proud of, one you know you did what you had to do or at the very least something you are proud of doing and not a selfish action with disregard to what happened next. Of course this moment alone isn’t going to determine your whole life, you still have more chances to make a difference but keep in mind that eventually you will run out of chances. The change begins now
