THINGS FOUND AT ROCK STAR DEATH SCENES
Some rock musicians are recognised as much for their flamboyant, premature, or just plain odd demises as for their great lives. Sadly, a rock star's lack of privacy often follows them into the afterlife since, as soon as they pass away, images, inquiries, and hypotheses surrounding their demise appear online. Fans will delve deeply into the stories behind the deaths of their rock idols today more than ever thanks to social media accessibility and humanity's age-old morbid fascination with death.
There can be considerable controversy even when a rock star passes away without raising any red flags. In January 2016, after David Bowie passed away, his social media accounts posted the following statement (via BBC): "[Bowie] died quietly, surrounded by his family." However, the subject was covered in later pieces. Despite claims that Bowie knew "Lazarus" would be his farewell song, The Guardian suggested that the 2016 song is not a sign of his impending death because the video was made before he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. NME even managed to unearth a time in the 1970s when a clairvoyant informed Bowie that he would pass away at the age of 69. So picture the attention and rumors that surround a rock star's passing when the cause is less evident or when drugs are used. Let's look at some of the most bizarre items discovered at rock celebrity crime sites.

KURT COBAIN
However, Cobain's heroin addiction, troubled relationship with Courtney Love, and stress brought on by fame propelled him down a dark path. According to Rolling Stone, Cobain attempted suicide in March 1994. Love entered treatment on her own in an effort to persuade Cobain to do the same. But in April, Cobain killed himself in the greenhouse of his Seattle home after obtaining a gun from a friend (claiming he needed to defend himself against intruders).
After his mother reported him missing and several of his acquaintances started to worry about his whereabouts, he was located four days later. Cobain's borrowed shotgun, a cigar box containing drug paraphernalia, his iconic sunglasses, a woollen trapper hat, and his suicide note, which he left in a plant pot with a pen struck through the middle, were all found at the scene. Two decades after his death, police released images from the scene in an effort to dispel murder conspiracy theories (via CBS).

AMY WINEHOUSE
Amy Winehouse won an astounding five Grammys in 2008 while still in her 20s, according to Grammy sources. "Back to Black," her album from 2006, topped all international charts. However, the singer rose to fame for both her amazing voice and her drug usage and eating disorder. She would have died eventually, the way she was going, but what really killed her was the bulimia, according to her brother Alex Winehouse, who told The Guardian that he believes it was her bulimia and not her excessive drug use that caused her death.
According to Tyler James, Amy Winehouse's best friend, stardom and the demands of the music business had a significant negative impact on her. She developed an eating disorder and used drugs more frequently as a result of the lack of anonymity and stardom. The BBC reported in June 2011 that she postponed her trip to address personal difficulties. Her bodyguard discovered her on the bed of her North London house on July 23 while she was still wearing her clothes. She had died of alcohol poisoning, as confirmed by two official inquiries to the Daily Mail. She had been watching movies of herself on the laptop that was sitting next to her body. Two empty vodka bottles lay on the ground; the scene is a representation of how fatal celebrity was for Amy Winehouse.

KEITH RELF
As the lead singer of the Yardbirds, Keith Relf rose to fame in the early 1960s (via Ultimate Classic Rock). He was likely greatly overshadowed by his comrades, guitarists Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page, if his name didn't garner as much attention. Jimmy Page took over the New Yardbirds after the Yardbirds split up in 1968, and they quickly changed their name to Led Zeppelin. Relf co-wrote the original version of Zeppelin's well-known song "Dazed and Confused," but it is not the only tie to them (via Showbiz Cheatsheet).Sadly, Relf didn't have much opportunity to contribute to rock 'n' roll history after that. Together, Renaissance, and Armageddon, his three rock bands, weren't particularly successful. And Relf's life would abruptly end on May 14, 1976. He was strumming his guitar in the cellar of his house when he walked on a gas pipe and was electrocuted to death. According to reports, his 8-year-old son discovered him there, along with the allegedly missing instrument.

CASS ELLIOT
Cass Elliot, who was well-liked by her listeners but, as Vogue implies, wasn't exempt from the fatphobic sentiments prevalent in the United States at the time, provided the melancholy voice of The Mamas and the Papas. This line appeared in the 1967 song "Creeque Alley" by her very own band. No one is gaining weight besides Mama Cass, As she recently remarked (per The Guardian), "I've been heavy since I was seven, and being fat puts you apart," Elliot had battled with her weight for decades. She began an extreme diet in which she fasted four days a week for seven consecutive months. She eventually lost 110 pounds in 1968 but ended up in the hospital as a result. According to a 1969 Time article, Elliot kept up a risky diet. She jokingly said that since she had to postpone $250,000 worth of gigs while she was in the hospital, it cost her $2,000 each pound. She said that the Mama Cass diet could result in acute tonsillitis, hemorrhage vocal chords, mononucleosis, and a case of hepatitis.
According to Vogue, Mama Cass was discovered dead in her London residence on July 29, 1974. She'd had a heart attack (the result of her intense diets). However, it was the ham sandwich that was discovered on her nightstand that gave rise to the fatphobic story that Elliot had choked to death on the meal. It was an offensive joke that downplayed Elliot's several attempts to slim down and, in a sense, her great career.

MICHAEL JACKSON
According to The Times, Michael Jackson was preparing for a significant comeback in 2009 with a series of farewell concerts at London's O2 Arena. Before ticket sales even began, 360,000 Jackson fans applied for tickets, and the 10 shows were increased to 50. However, according to CNN, Jackson was experiencing acute insomnia at the time; he had gone 60 days in a row without achieving REM sleep. This led to a number of problems: He would talk to himself, had paranoid periods, and had trouble remembering songs or dancing steps.
Conrad Murray, Jackson's physician, decided to give him propofol at that time. But because propofol does not provide the patient with REM sleep, anaesthesia expert Dr. Charles Czeisler advises against ever using it as a sleep aid (and this can be lethal). Jackson was discovered dead on June 25, 2009, and the scene was, to put it mildly, unsettling. Bottles of propofol and benzodiazepines were present at the death site, according to TMZ, and their combination caused the fatal overdose (via iNews). But inside was also an oxygen tank, an IV drip, a book on cardiology, a vintage doll, and Benoquin tubes (which Jackson used to treat his vitiligo). The latter can be viewed as a spooky reflection of the damaging accusations made against him.

CHRIS CORNELL
Chris Cornell, the band's frontman, was one of the major figures of the grunge era, and in 2017, he and his group were on tour again (via All That's Interesting). On May 17, Soundgarden performed their final performance at the Fox Theatre in Detroit, Michigan. Cornell retired to his hotel room at the MGM Grand after the performance. However, a half-hour before midnight, his wife observed that the lights in their Los Angeles home were flickering on and off. She worried about Cornell's mental health because he could turn the lights on and off using an app on his phone. Cornell apparently stumbled over his words when his wife contacted him; she didn't trust him when he claimed to have taken merely a few Ativan dozes (anti-anxiety medication). Martin Kirsten, Cornell's bodyguard, was then summoned by her to visit Cornell. On May 18, shortly after midnight, Kirsten entered the space and saw a horrifying death scene, according to Digital Music News. Cornell had used an exercise band to commit suicide. Prednisone, omeprazole, and lorazepam pill bottles were finally discovered by the police officers who arrived on the site. Additional items from Cornell's death scene include his instrument, guitar case, sunglasses, a deodorant bottle, and a container for contact lenses.

ELVIS PRESLEY
On May 18, shortly after midnight, Kirsten entered the space and saw a horrifying death scene, according to Digital Music News. Cornell had used an exercise band to commit suicide. Prednisone, omeprazole, and lorazepam pill bottles were finally discovered by the police officers who arrived on the site. Additional items from Cornell's death scene include his instrument, guitar case, sunglasses, a deodorant bottle, and a container for contact lenses. According to Billboard, The King of Rock 'n' Roll spent 67 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, had 108 Billboard Hot 100 hits, and had 129 albums chart on the Billboard 200. But according to I Love Classic Rock, Elvis Presley had withdrawn from the public eye and had developed addictions to junk food and a variety of prescription and over-the-counter medications during the last year of his life (opiates, barbiturates, and sedatives included, as per Town and Country). Presley's girlfriend Ginger Alden discovered him unconscious on the toilet floor of their Graceland home in Memphis on August 16, 1977. According to the Daily Mail, when the paramedics got to the scene, they discovered an empty bottle of Parafon Forte painkiller tablets and a vial of the tanning medication Trisolaren. In 2015, the two bottles were put up for auction in New York.

Presley had far more in his system, however, when the paramedics rushed him to the hospital that day: Dilaudid, Percodan, Demerol (all opioids), Quaaludes, and codeine. Presley was declared dead at 3:30 p.m., and his doctor, Dr. George Nichopoulos, ultimately had his license suspended for writing Presley many of the prescriptions that led to his death.

WHITNEY HOUSTON
Whitney Houston rose to fame as a singer around the world, but she also battled addiction and a turbulent personal life (from childhood trauma to difficult relationships, as Vanity Fair explains). Houston was married to the artist Bobby Brown during the 1990s and 2000s, and their union was much discussed, including references to violent behavior and heavy drug usage (via Yahoo News). Brown clarified that both he and Houston suffered from major addiction issues on A&E's "Biography: Bobby Brown" (as reported by Yahoo! News), that he wasn't the "bad boy" portrayed by tabloids as the destructive influence who got Houston addicted to drugs. He said that the alleged battery, which ultimately caused their marriage to dissolve, was the result of an accident in which he was aiming for Houston's dealer but instead struck her in the face.
According to Insider, Houston and Brown's marriage ended in 2007, but she persisted in abusing drugs. According to the Daily Mail, she was discovered dead in a bathtub at the Beverly Hills Hilton on February 11, 2012. A hairbrush, two hair bands, many prescription medications, as well as olive oil mixed with water, were found at the site. According to ABC News, the official cause of death was drowning, which was made possible by heart problems and cocaine addiction.

AARON CARTER
In the early 2000s, Aaron Carter enjoyed success with young people thanks to songs like "Aaron's Party (Come Get It)" and "That's How I Beat Shaq" (via Billboard). By the time he was 13, Carter already had three of the best-selling albums, according to The Guardian. Teenage popularity can, however, cause a variety of issues; in Carter's case, his parents wasted half a billion dollars of his money, as he revealed to VladTV. And the issues persisted throughout his adolescence.
Carter, according to US Weekly, battled substance misuse and fell into a black hole following the passing of his father in 2017. He admitted that when he was younger, he didn't think he would live past the age of 30, but at the time of the interview, he was feeling more optimistic: "I experienced a great deal of trauma, grief, and loneliness. I simply felt like I needed to leave. The phoenix that emerges from the ashes is what I hope to be."
Carter's predicament began to worsen in 2022 though. He had lost custody of his son and was reportedly battling to regain it in September, according to the Los Angeles Times. His housekeeper discovered him unconscious in his bath in November; he had drowned at the age of 34. (via TMZ). A further TMZ report details the horrible killing scene: Prescription pharmaceutical bottles, cans of compressed air, and bottles were found in the bathroom and bedroom, raising the possibility that the drowning was caused by drugs.

JANIS JOPLIN
Janis Joplin, much like Jimi Hendrix or Jim Morrison, was the pinnacle of the hippie movement. She was also a very bright artist and a new voice in a male-dominated field. However, according to "I Ran Into Some Trouble," the memoir of her friend Peggy Caserta, available online at All That's Interesting, the two of them battled heroin addiction. Joplin was found dead in her Hollywood hotel room on October 4, 1970. She was discovered holding a box of smokes and cash in each hand. Her relatives dispersed her ashes into the Pacific Ocean three days after her body was burnt. However, Caserta was disappointed because she had used the same amount around the same time as her and it wasn't that potent, leading her to believe that Joplin hadn't actually died of a heroin overdose. She was found holding cash and smokes, but the entire circumstances of her death are still unknown.
