The world is short-staffed

Is the demand for that service in your community met?

Depending on where you live, it might be hard for you to tell but the world is short-staffed. You may be in a buzzing city, crowded all the time so it would be difficult for you to believe this but overall, the world is short staffed and it doesn’t matter what industry you are talking about. In this article, I am going to cover the hardest hit industries, but before that, let’s try to understand the “why” first.

Why is the world short-staffed?

Society has been built around human beings and their needs so who better to fulfill our needs than ourselves? Wild animals for example, don’t have this problem because all that they need, they get it from nature, whether its food, shelter, medication, entertainment, etc You don’t really see any wild animals recruit staff, the most they can do is form groups just for security purposes etc. Our needs have grown through the ages and we are no longer content with just what we can get from nature, this has led to a whole complexity which gave birth to countless industries which can only be ran by us; The funny part is that these complexities didn’t just solve problems but actually created entirely new ones and now we are in this infinite loop of creating and solving problems. The demand for services is ever increasing meanwhile the supply is hard to maintain.

There is a dual problem here; take for example a simple restaurant, they could try and cook enough to satisfy the whole community but that will come with difficult ramifications; recruiting a lot of persons is a hassle, getting raw materials is a hassle, the whole financial management is a hassle and much more. Even if they got all that right, demand isn’t constant, it fluctuates but their costs doesn’t, trying to be at a net gain is what every industry strives to achieve.

The takeaway here is that, due to our ever increasing needs, a whole complexity of industries had to be created to meet those needs, and they can only work with human intervention, and this complexity solved some problems and created new ones.

Short-staffed industries

I think the list would be shorter if I listed the industries that aren’t short-staffed but I am not going to do that. Here are the hardest hit industries suffering from a shortage of staff, with no possible solution in sight.

  • Healthcare
  • Food service
  • Education
  • Transport and logistics
  • Construction
  • Technology
  • Many more

Just ask yourself a simple question if you want to verify this. Is the demand for that service in your community met? Do you have enough food for everyone? Are there enough schools, houses, and doctors? probably not. Don’t even get me started on how these problems are intertwined because something like the lack of education leads to the shortage of healthcare, which eventually affects construction, limits technology, and all comes back again to destroy education.

The origins of the problem

I don’t think the problem is necessarily the way society was built, it might be but I don’t think that’s where it started. You have to keep in mind that these are all things we want, the only problem is how they are executed. All of this complexity relies on a financial system which is brittle to say the least, when the country is doing well financially, all these sectors thrive but when its struggling financially it has a snowball effect which makes all of these industries terrible. A deeper analysis will require for me to write a whole book on this.

A ray of hope

The main problem with the way we built society was the fact that only us could run it which made it very difficult to run because we were standing on the same system we were trying to fix, that’s like trying to fix a plane mid air. There are just so many things which can go wrong. However, there is a ray of hope today with the advent of AI,

we have the opportunity now to have our industries run on autopilot either through automated systems or robots which means we can fix the problem of short staff.

Our needs as a society are just so enormous and there are not enough people to fulfil all those needs, but with additional help we would be able to meet those needs.

Conclusion

Our needs are just so many and the industrial system in it’s current state is unable to meet up with the demand. The industries meant to tackle this demand are interlinked with each other which has made it much more difficult to deal with the staff shortage. Hopefully, technology can help address all of these problems in the near future, contrarily to humans who have to be recruited and trained, automated systems like robots can be easily trained, reassigned, and scaled based on the demand.
