The Svea Witch

Urban Legend

By Sai Marie JohnsonPublished 9 months ago Updated 9 months ago 3 min read

For a while, I lived on the Alabama/Florida border in a tiny town that rested at the forks of Highway 331-South and Highway 85-South.

This put the Florida border a rock’s throw away, and while I lived there I was fortunate to learn quite a bit from the locals.

One of the urban legends I learned about was The Svea Witch (pronounced Swear).

The enigmatic town of Svea lies just across the Florida state line, nestled in the shadowed embrace of ancient yellow pines. Its location on Highway 85 makes it the primary route to Eglin Air Force Base and Hurlburt Field.

Its serenity is as profound as the mysteries that cling to its edges, and Central to these tales is the infamous Robinson Road, a dark ribbon that snakes through the dense woods.

Legend speaks of the Svea Witch, a spectral figure said to haunt this lonely stretch. Those brave or foolish enough to venture down Robinson Road at midnight, lights extinguished halfway through, are said to encounter her chilling presence.

Her mark, it’s claimed, is undeniable: deep, clawed scratches upon the vehicle, a chilling testament to the encounter.

While some dismiss this as mere folklore, born of shadowed minds and lonely nights, others swear by its veracity.

Whether fact or fiction, the tale of the Svea Witch casts a long, eerie shadow over the tranquil town, a chilling whisper in the twilight, a haunting echo in the depths of the woods.

Would you go venturing down a creepy road to find a witch? Or are there any urban legends in your area that you've not heard spoken of much?

I've been considering adding a section to my content creation about more urban legends, true crime, and horror stories, and I am incredibly curious to hear what my audience has experienced!

I also submitted another intersecting story to a true ghost stories collection that was released back in September 2024, and is near to the area where the Svea witch urban legend is rumored to occur.

I have had many unique and interesting harrowing experiences, but this one landing in an anthology by a ghost hunter with experience is one I feel y'all will also enjoy, and I couldn't let you miss out on hearing about it.

I can tell you one thing is for certain - of all the creepy places I've ventured to and my experiences in Southern Alabama into the Florida swamps have a surreal magic (creepiness) that is entirely unlike any other.

Like this story? Another account of mine is fully published in a book collection of weird and creepy tales entitled True Ghost Stories and Hauntings, Volume 3 from Barb Shadow!

BLURB: Have you ever had a ghostly encounter? A brush with the unexplained? True Ghost Stories and Hauntings, Volume 3, is a collection of paranormal experiences by people just like you.

A woman unearths human bones and, inadvertently, wakes the dead.

A little girl wishes for her doll to come alive and is terrified when it climbs out of its carriage.

A boy runs through the shadow of a man with a top hat, only to be pushed down the stairs.

And an entity with no face wraps itself around a woman, showing her hideous, blood-red visions.

These are a few of the more than 150 hair-raising encounters included in the latest collection of True Ghost Stories and Hauntings. Paranormal investigator Barb Shadow compiled this volume of the unexplained to give a glimpse at what sometimes steps from the shadows.

The dead have a lot to say – perhaps we should listen.

Pick it up and find my story entitled, "Florala's Bayou Cryptid."
