The Shadow Game
Some secrets should never be uncovered...
In a quiet, seemingly ordinary neighborhood, there lived a 10-year-old girl named Pari. She was a charming and innocent child, loved by everyone. Every day after school, Pari would come home, hug her mother tightly, and then lose herself in the world of her dolls. She lived in a blissful routine, unaware of the darkness that lurked in the corners of her life.
One day, Pari's mother had to leave for an urgent errand and entrusted Pari's care to her 15-year-old aunt, Soni. Soni was more than just an aunt—she was Pari’s best friend. The two of them shared a special bond, filled with laughter and secrets. Soni, despite her young age, was mature and responsible, always making sure that Pari was safe and happy.
As the evening drew closer, Pari’s mother left the house, leaving behind a warm meal for the girls. However, Pari had a craving for something different and asked Soni to make her a sandwich. Soni, always eager to please, headed to the kitchen. She found the ingredients and carefully began preparing the sandwich.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Soni opened the door to find Pari’s father standing there. He had returned unexpectedly from a business trip. Soni called Pari to the door, and she joyfully received the gifts her father had brought for her. After the brief excitement, Pari returned to her dolls, leaving Soni and her father in the kitchen.
As Soni turned back to the sandwich, a strange feeling crept over her. The air seemed to grow heavier, and an uncomfortable silence filled the room. Pari’s father watched Soni intently as she worked, his gaze making her feel uneasy. When the smell of burning reached them, Soni realized she had left the sandwich on the machine too long. She rushed to turn it off, but the sandwich was already ruined.
Pari’s father approached her with a calm voice, telling her it was no big deal. He gave her a reassuring hug, but something in his touch felt wrong. Soni, unsure of what to do, tried to step back, but he held her tighter. Her heart began to race as the kitchen seemed to close in around her. "It’s just a game," he whispered, his voice laced with something dark and menacing.
Pari, hearing her father mention a game, ran into the kitchen, her face lighting up with excitement. She clapped her hands, thinking they were playing a fun game, completely oblivious to the fear in Soni’s eyes. Her father, sensing an opportunity, led Soni out of the kitchen, with Pari following closely behind, still believing it was all in good fun.
But then, something shifted. Pari’s father’s grip tightened, and Soni’s struggle became more frantic. Realizing something was very wrong, Soni tried to break free, her voice trembling as she called out to Pari. "Stay back, Pari," she pleaded, her voice breaking. But Pari, too young to understand, just watched in confusion.
As Soni’s fear turned to terror, the atmosphere in the house grew thick with tension. Pari’s father began pulling Soni towards another room, the shadows of the house seeming to close in around them. Soni's cries echoed through the house, but Pari’s father silenced them with a chilling threat, sending a cold shiver down Soni’s spine.
That night, the house was shrouded in an eerie silence. Soni lay motionless, her mind racing with the horrors she had endured. When Pari’s mother returned, she noticed Soni’s pale face and asked what had happened, but Soni couldn’t bring herself to speak the truth. She only mentioned a stomachache, and Pari’s mother, unaware of the real reason, offered her some medicine and sent her to rest.
Days passed, but Soni was never the same. She avoided Pari’s father at all costs, her once lively spirit now replaced by a haunting fear. Eventually, Soni left, vanishing from Pari’s life without a word. Pari was heartbroken, but life continued, the memory of that night buried deep in the shadows.
Years later, Pari was now in college, a young woman with a bright future ahead of her. But the past had a way of catching up. One day, a theater group visited her college, performing a play about hidden secrets and societal corruption. Pari, always interested in performances, attended the play. As she watched, her heart began to race. The scenes on stage mirrored that night from years ago, and suddenly, it all came back to her—the “game,” the fear in Soni’s eyes, the twisted reality of what had happened.
Shocked and confused, Pari rushed home after the performance. She locked herself in her room, replaying the scenes in her mind, trying to piece together the truth. What she had once believed to be an innocent game was now revealed as something far more sinister. The realization hit her like a cold wave, and she wept for Soni, for herself, and for the innocence that had been shattered.
The next day, Pari confronted her mother, demanding to know the truth. But her mother’s reaction was even more disturbing. She remained calm, almost indifferent, as if she had known all along. Pari couldn’t believe her ears. The very person she had trusted the most had been complicit in the silence.
Desperate for answers, Pari decided to visit Soni, hoping to make amends. But when she arrived, Soni refused to see her, leaving Pari even more heartbroken. In a final attempt to reach out, Pari wrote a letter, apologizing for not understanding back then and asking for forgiveness.
Days later, Soni appeared at Pari’s doorstep, her face pale and haunted. As she stepped into the house, memories of that fateful night overwhelmed her, and she collapsed in tears. Pari rushed to her side, holding her tightly, but their reunion was cut short by the arrival of Pari’s father.
Soni recoiled in fear as he approached, but this time, Pari stood her ground. "Stay away from her," she warned, her voice trembling with anger and determination. Her father, taken aback by her defiance, tried to dismiss her, but Pari was done with his lies.
In that moment, everything changed. Pari’s mother tried to intervene, but Pari silenced her with a piercing glare. "You knew," she accused, her voice filled with betrayal. Her mother’s weak excuses only fueled Pari’s rage. She had lost all respect for the people she once called family.
Pari packed her belongings and left the house with Soni, vowing never to return. Together, they joined the theater group, using their story to expose the darkness that had nearly consumed them. As they performed across the city, Soni found the strength to stand up against her past, with Pari by her side.
But as they delved deeper into the shadows of their past, they uncovered more secrets, each more horrifying than the last. The truth was out there, waiting to be revealed, but it came with a price. The closer they got to exposing the truth, the more dangerous their journey became.
And so, what began as a story of innocence lost turned into a relentless pursuit of justice. But the shadows they fought against were powerful and merciless, and as they ventured further into the darkness, they realized that some secrets are too dangerous to be uncovered.
Epilogue:
"The Shadow Game" was never just a game. It was a twisted reality that had been hidden away for far too long. But now, the truth is out, and there’s no turning back. The question is, how far are you willing to go to uncover the shadows that lurk in the darkness?"

This was gripping all the way through. I love how Soni and Pari relationship developed, once pari was old enough to understand. So gripping, so real and much torture - what pari realised about the world around her.
