I love my job as a Security Supervisor.

By Sara TaylorPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

I love my job because I get to help people and get to keep people safe. As a security supervisor I always manage two security officers, and I secure three buildings of over seven hundred employees. I take care of employees with injuries and if there is an emergency. Sometimes my job is stressful but most of the time it is easy, and I get to watch cameras. I do not have too much interaction with the employees because by the time I come to work the employees are getting ready to go home. My hours are from 3 pm to 11pm, so most of my time is sitting watching cameras. I do have to patrol the buildings looking for leaks and emergencies and safety concerns.

Most nights it is boring here because nothing really happens here and now with the COVID stuff happening there are hardly any employees coming into the buildings. It makes for long nights with not much to do. It is easy work that is not stressful at all, despite this fact some of the other supervisors think it is stressful and busy. I do work a lot of hours some weeks when other supervisors call off from work, but that just makes for a good paycheck. I do not mind the hours or the job, it is all I have ever done since I was eighteen years old. I did it in the military and for other security companies. There is something rewarding about keeping a facility and its employees safe.

My first job was as a security guard in Nebraska and during Tornados it was my job to make sure the buildings were secure, and everyone was in the tornado shelter tunnel before I could enter the tunnel for shelter myself. It was scary during those times, but I always felt good and like I was keeping people safe when doing it. I enjoy helping people and during emergencies people look you as a security person for assistance and for level-headedness and you are the calm in the storm. It keeps them grounded and gives them a sense of security knowing someone else is there and can help them and is calm in the face of adversity. Security is not for everyone, and it takes a lot of mental toughness especially when there is an emergency.

I love being the supervisor because I get to train other security professionals to be security officers and to do a job and stay calm in the face of adversity. I also love my job because I can pass on my knowledge and feel like I am helping someone else grow in a career that needs good people. I love being a security professional because I genuinely care about other people and their safety. I also care about their property and keeping it safe. Being in this profession you cannot be anti-social or not willing to help people. Yes, most of the time you are alone watching cameras, but sometimes you do have to interact with the public or employees and when you do you need to be polite and very customer service oriented. Some people have this ability and others do not, it makes the difference if you are polite, and they feel like you are there to help and are friendly. I love this part of my job. I love getting to know the employees by name it makes them think you care about them personally.

I love my job mainly because I feel I am needed, and I am helping someone and performing a necessary function in the global cog of society. It gives me a sense of dignity and pride knowing I can go home at night and the building and employees are safe.
