How I Turned My Weakness Into A Superpower
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger
For many years I didn't have a healthy relationship with food. In fact, when I was younger, I struggled with anorexia and bulimia. These eating disorders, along with depression, made my life a living nightmare.
I hated myself and the way I looked. I didn't like being obese.
However, I was stuck in a loop. A vicious cycle of eating, feeling bad about it and comforting myself with more food. This pattern led me to gain more weight and sink deeper into despair.
Being obese prevented me from enjoying so many things and negatively impacted my life.
My story
I've tried almost every diet known to mankind but failed to keep the weight off for good. Sometimes I lost few pounds, other times more... Some days, I lived only on an apple a day. I'm sure that isn't the point of the saying, "an apple a day keeps the doctor away."
Overeating or starving were my two go-to modes. Deep down, I knew that the all-or-nothing approach would lead me nowhere, but I had no idea how to escape this eating pattern.
Anything can become an addiction, even food. However, overeating can be challenging to handle.
With most addictions, you have to avoid the substance or habit by all means. You can't take a small amount of drugs, alcohol, or gamble from time to time.
But when it comes to food, you can't avoid eating. You have to eat every day. Otherwise, you won't survive.
I tried to find a balance, but that made me feel like walking on a tightrope. I was struggling to control every single step I took, and falling down was inevitable.
The problem isn't finding a diet that works
Over the years, I realized that everybody who wants to lose weight focuses primarily on diets. What to eat, when to eat, how much to eat...
I discovered that your portions are the last thing you have to worry about if you want to lose weight.
Overeating is a symptom.
The cause is hidden, just like the actual size of an iceberg. You can only see the tip, but 90% of the iceberg is hidden below the water's surface.
Our thoughts, feelings, and how we view ourselves are the root of the problem.
I wanted to find answers to my problems
Although my studies included journalism and film directing, I felt the urge to continue my education.
I wanted to find ways to help me create a healthy relationship with food and my body. So I searched for answers by studying personal training and acquiring many specializations.
I also studied nutrition, and I have become a transformation specialist. I learned the skills and techniques required to truly coach and influence behavioral patterns to achieve weight loss.
My problem became my inspiration to study and search for the answers I was so desperately seeking all this time.
I also created my blog Butterful Soul about nutrition and personal development. My dream is to help other people love their bodies and live healthier both physically and mentally.
I want to help women feel empowered
Being a woman is a difficult thing. We have so many responsibilities and, most of the time, neglect ourselves. We are prone to stress, and this can easily lead us to turn to food for comfort.
Unhealthy eating habits might not show the consequences right now but can affect your health in the future. Why do you have to suffer as you get older? Overeating can age you on the inside and the outside.
Additionally, I want to help women because they influence their children's eating habits. Kids don't follow their parent's advice. They do what their parents do. Leading by example is a way to help them create a healthy relationship with food.
I can't stand children, especially girls, getting bullied at school because they are overweight or obese. Children can be really mean to each other whether we like it or not.
Dealing with such psychological abuse at an early age can have a massive impact on your life. I don't want anyone to go through it if we can prevent it. Again it isn't about the looks. Obesity is affecting children's health.
I feel inspired by people who lost weight
Watching people lose weight and regaining their confidence is a great inspiration for me. I really look up to these people. I know how hard it is to go through a transformation and take control of your life.
You can see it in their eyes.
They feel like they're alive again. A whole new world of possibilities opens in front of them. They can enjoy new hobbies, activities, play with their children, and squeeze more out of life than ever before.
My plan
I want to help women reach their weight goals and gain confidence. I will create a membership newsletter and a community that will include recipes, tips on losing weight, and ways to gain confidence.
Practical advice that they can use every day. I want to help people change their mindset about their identity and their ability to take control of their life.
Going on a diet can feel like you are sentenced to a life of suffering. Eating less than your pet, feeling hungry all the time, having no energy, counting every calorie, and solving complex equations to find your macros.
Who can stick to a diet when they feel that way? I'm sure no one. But it doesn't have to be that way.
I want to change these limiting beliefs. Eating healthy doesn't have to be tasteless, and you don't have to starve yourself. If you discover the right reasons, your "why", you can do it.
"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit."
Aristotle
The online world is a great place to reach people and create a positive impact in their lives. Helping other people face their challenges is the most rewarding thing in the world.
