DJ Cuppy Explains Disturbing Phone Call With Her Mother (Video)

"2021 was really difficult for me"

By Jide OkonjoPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

Welcome to 2022! This is the first post I'll officially be making this new year so I just have to use this medium to say, welcome to the new year. I wish you a wonderful, happy year filled with joy, laughter, money, and peace of mind.

2021 was undeniably quite a tough year for many. Across the board, across countries, across financial strata, the year hit everybody in a different way. From the man in the bank to the celebrity on stage. One such celebrity opening up now about just how difficult the year was on her is Nigerian DJ and singer, DJ Cuppy.

The DJ and socialite took to social media to post an excerpt from a phone call that she had with her mother. On the call, Cuppy sounded manic and frustrated and her mother was trying to calm her down as well as give her advice to help. It is quite an intimate, sad, and for fans of Cuppy, disturbing voice call to listen to because it is sad to hear someone we love going through it like this.

Below is the voice note that Cuppy posted, along with what she had to say about the recording.

The Phone Call.

If you don't feel like playing the clip, here is a transcript of the 1 minute, 23 second conversation clip.

Cuppy's Mother: You went through that hard time and it passed but if you did not deal with the reason of that hard time, it’s going to come back again Ife. That hard time came to tell you something about you, about yourself, about what’s going on that you need to – what we don’t own, we don’t heal. What we don’t feel, we don’t heal. If you don’t heal it, it is going to be there and it’s going to show up again. And those times keep showing up sometimes with stronger power, and I don’t think it’s only tiredness or overwork. There are some internal turmoils, struggles.

DJ Cuppy: I don’t know, I’m just so competitive with everything. It’s like I’m in competition with myself, I don’t know. In fact, I’m not in competition with anybody so I don’t care if I’m not the thinnest, I don’t care if someone is smarter, someone is skinnier, someone is more fashionable, has more money. But I’m obsessed with pushing myself and it can be dangerous.

Cuppy's Mother: Not that it can be (dangerous), it is dangerous.

Speaking about the phone call conversation, DJ Cuppy said in her Instagram caption:

An intimate convo with my mum…

I think it’s really important to be honest that’s always been my brand and also my actual real personality as Florence Ife Otedola.

2021 was really difficult for me; I do SO much, it’s like I have a million different careers… and I do with a smile and a sprinkle of pink but I’ve had some REAL life issues along the way. Very often as celebrities or influences we make everything look glamorised but the truth is sometimes I don’t feel okay.

I felt like it was really important to share this with you because I’m 2022 I’m doing ME and I’m putting MYSELF first. This might mean I will not be the biggest or the best but at least I may be happier. Maybe this is also message for those that struggle with work addiction and feel like they always need to prove something and push themselves- you are more than enough and sometimes what we’re chasing isn’t going to make us feel anymore achieved.

So take a moment to clap for yourself and focus on self-love in 2022. I wish nothing but happiness and peace for you, as I search for mine too…

Hopefully 2022 is kinder to DJ Cuppy. The singer has already gone for a different look this new year by completely shaving her head. What do you think about the look and Cuppy's voice note? Let me know by leaving a comment on my Facebook post.
