A few of my favourite childhood memories

Healing from my own childhood trauma as a parent hasn’t been easy—it’s been truly painful. But this journey is mine, and I’m truly proud of the person I’m becoming for my own children.

The other day, I was talking with my partner and found myself texting my step-dad to confirm a random memory I had from when I was three. I needed to know if it was real or if I’d just imagined it.

Here are a few childhood memories I hold onto, memories no one can take away from me, because they bring me joy and hold deep meaning for me. I wonder what my kids will remember later in life.

  • The memory I texted my dad about, was highly illegal actually. When we moved into a new house, I got to ride in the back of his pickup truck with a bunch of my stuffed animals. He said there were other things in the truck too but all I can remember was how happy I was, surrounded by my stuffies and excited about our new house because I got to have a playroom there. I could never imagine letting my kids do that. My dad is a farmer though so things like that tend to slide. But still what we're my parents thinking, trusting a three year old in the back of a truck by herself.
  • I remember going to my grandparents cabin- a place I still call my happy place to this day. It was just their old house from town on a plot at a lake five minutes away from our small community. my grandma cautioned me away from the gaping hole in the floor from where their old stair case used to be. I remember this old toy house that I got to play with that night as we had a sleepover out there. It's still out at the cabin and nothing makes my heart happier than seeing my children play with that twenty five year old toy.
  • I remember my face being stained red after my fourth birthday party because I got to have this super cool lady bug cake that my mom made herself. My nickname is Bug. I even have a matching ladybug tattoo with my mom. My late Auntie, said when I was born, that I was as cute as a bug. Therefore, my nickname became Bug. Or Fragel as my grandma used to call me.
  • I also remember having the chicken pox when I was about five years old. I remember feeling so itchy. I was having an oatmeal bath and my grandpa had come over with A&W (his favorite fast food place) for me to eat. That small gesture meant the entire world to me and I still think about that. I even told my oldest son about this memory as he's vaccinated he will never get the chicken pox. I think I confused him honestly. I still thought it was a cool story to tell him about his Papa.
  • I remember one of my brothers births. I can't exactly remember which one as I have two younger brothers. I was so excited for my grandparents to pick me up after Grade 1 so I could go to the hospital and meet my sibling. I definitely think it was my middle brothers birth- not the younger one. They are only 14 months apart though that could be why I only remember one birth.
  • I remember my Granny's funeral. I was six at the time. She was my favorite human being. She always let me have cookies whenever I would go to her house. I remember making perogies with her and sauerkraut. I remember specifically how the cabbage smelt. I remember her funeral and touching her face. I definitely am glad my kids missed my late grandmother's viewing because I know that was really hard for me to go through as a child. I still miss her dearly.
  • Fun story, when I was maybe five years old. I called 911 from my Granny's house. She lived on a farm so when I actually got a person on the phone I immediately hung up. I was terrified of getting in trouble. Weeeeell they called back, and sure shit I got in huge trouble. I love that memory though. That was before she got sick.
  • The last memory I want to write about is my bunnies. I had a few bunny rabbits when I was really young. It was my sweet grandpa's idea to be honest with you. Well, sure enough it was a bad one. I remember playing with the neighbour kid- I can't remember his name however. He was around my age. One bunny rabbit bit him and I felt so awful about that because I was used to them biting. My mom made us get rid of the rabbits after that. I also remember how beautiful that backyard was, there were poppies that grew naturally in the yard. It made me feel like a fairy princess, playing in the yard. I'll never forget that little house.

This trip down memory lane was sweet. I truly enjoyed writing about this today. I hope you guys find my beautiful childhood memories to be sweet as well.

What is your favourite childhood memory? Or the earliest thing your memory can grab? I know everyone is different.

My grandparent's cabin. I wrote this in a different time of my life, but there are some beautiful memories attached to this post as well. If you liked this one, please check out "Home Right Down The Road" by yours truly.

    Aww, these were indeed great childhood memories, Chloe. It feels like you were loved and well cared for, despite riding in the back of the truck (different times, different standards). Awhile ago, I also wrote a story about my earliest childhood memory from my Soviet past here, if you are interested: https://shopping-feedback.today/families/a-birthday-trip-to-remember%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E%3C/div%3E%3C/div%3E%3C/div%3E%3Cstyle data-emotion-css="w4qknv-Replies">.css-w4qknv-Replies{display:grid;gap:1.5rem;}
