Can you change your fate?

Is our fate already predestined or are we the ones who shape it ?

I guess it all depends on which angle you are looking at this, an argument can be made about how our actions led us down a certain path and eventually to a specific place and another can be made about how our environment is responsible for all the things we did. Either ways I think it all comes down to the same thing at the end of the day.

In my opinion there isn’t a predestined future awaiting you but your actions and environment constantly change this future. Some people tend to think that there is a specific future awaiting you and no matter what you do you’ll eventually end up there but I think otherwise, our environment as much as our actions have a great impact on what our destiny will be.

What shapes your fate?

There are multiple factors at play here, when you look at a simple equation like (1 + 1 = 2) which can be translated to (variable, factor, variable = results), the end results depends on all the elements involved, some might play a minor role while others might play a major role. Whether it is our actions, circumstances, background or environment, they all play roles at varying degrees to produce the results of your life. Arguably I think the most consequential of these factors is the environment you find yourself in, mainly because it has the greatest impact to your mentality and consequentially your actions.

Its harder to fail in the right environment likewise, its harder to succeed in the wrong environment, else they won’t bare that name. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t an exact science, people are influenced at different degrees by these factors so I am not trying to set a rule here.

Changing your fate

Aside from the environment you are born in, the next biggest factor which influences your fate is your mentality, the way you think. Keep in mind here that I am not giving a specific definition of a good or bad fate here, it actually comes down to how you perceive the world. For some, a humble lifestyle full of kids and a happy home is the greatest success they could ever imagine, while for others being known across the globe is for them the greatest. To talk about changing your fate comes down most essentially to changing your mentality because that directly influences everything else. It even determines how you perceive your environment.

Controlling your fate can be directly achieved through controlling your mentality and the way you perceive the world. Your actions are always a result of the way you think, you can only do the things you understand so if we’ve agreed that your actions ultimately lead you down a certain path, so influencing those actions can ultimately stir you in one way or the other.

The best moment we get to influence the fate of a person is when they are still a kid and have a fresh mind willing to learn and absorb new things. Its at this moment you can easily shape a person’s mind and guarantee a certain fate but past this point it becomes a lot more difficult.

Unforeseen circumstances

Your fate isn’t just a product of the things you can do or control, there are also things which are simply beyond your control and for which you have no influence. An accident, a lucky break, opportunities etc, but there is no point talking about things beyond our control. However its important to point out just how much of an impact these can have in our overall fate, for example an accident might change the trajectory of our lives completely, the same goes if you won the lottery or got a lucky break. None of this is easily predictable, you can’t just say to yourself I am going to win the lottery and start planning your future on that basis.

As a grown up

Like I said earlier, when you are already a grown up, your mentality has been pretty much set in place, you’ve already gone past the learning phase of your life and the things you believe in are pretty much set in place. They are guiding you down a path which can’t really be changed anymore, years of experience have pretty much cemented those beliefs in you that’s why your fate somehow becomes inevitable.

Changing your mindset at this point is no walk in the park, it will require some drastic measures to rewrite the experiences you’ve had and the actions you take. To be honest its really hard to do to the extent people don’t even care anymore. Here is an example: imagine just how hard it would be to teach a grown up how to enjoy reading if all their life they’ve never liked that, compare that with teaching a child how to read. The difficulty isn’t the same.

Conclusion

There are multiple factors which shape our fate and the greatest of all are our environment and our mentality because they shape our actions. Its much harder to change our mentality past a certain age which is why eventually our fate becomes inevitable.

The most direct way to change your fate is to change your actions and that can only be accomplished through a change in your mentality and way of understanding the world around you.
