A Face Palm of a Day: Part 1
What happens when you combine New York City, procrastination, anxiety, a boozy brunch, lack of critical thinking, and a wedding?
"Shit." Kate groaned squinting at her phone, trying to shield the bright October sun that was boring into her eyeballs. She had yet to put a shade over her window. That's something that's, "on her list." Ohh, the infamous list. A mile-long mental list of things Kate knew she would never do.
She had somehow managed to fall back asleep after her alarm went off. She'd planned to wake up early, take the subway into the city and buy a dress and shoes for her friend's wedding happening later that day in the Hamptons. She was meeting her other friends for a Sunday brunch beforehand so she was already behind schedule, imagine that.
Kate took a deep breath and said or rather groaned "Okay!" As she started to dig through the piles on her floor for something to wear to brunch. 20 minutes later she was waiting for the F train to take her into the city. After 10 minutes later, a muffled announcement told her the F train was down. "Classic" Kate said aloud. She typically talked out loud to herself since moving to New York City. That's one thing she liked about the city, people in the city had seen it all so they aren't going to think twice about some random girl talking to herself. That is if they even bothered to notice her at all.
She finally was able to hop on the R train to Prince street station. She power walked to Soho and pushed through the doors at Zara. She could always count on them to have a fairly affordable cute dress for literally any event. She quickly walked through and grabbed dresses in her size.
After trying on the fifth dress a little panic started to rise in the pit of her stomach. All the dresses were wrong. They cut weird on her, hugged her in the wrong places, they weren't going to work. A bubble of panic began to rise in the pit of her stomach. She had 30 minutes until she needed to meet her friends. Kate was a lot of things, scatterbrained, loud, a major procrastinator, but never late. Especially not to brunch.
Kate rushed out of Zara and nearly ran through H&M.
Nothing.
"You have got to be freaking kidding me" Kate mumbled. She was starting to sweat as she kept up her frantic speed walking to Forever 21. "There, a black dress. Perfect." She flew into a dressing room, didn't even bother to take off her clothes she yanked the dress over her head. "Thank the Lord." Kate sighed. Since it was only 10:00 am on a Saturday there wasn't a line at the checkout. She quickly paid and booked it out of there. She had 15 minutes before she needed to meet her friends.
"Dammit!" Kate said aloud, she still needed shoes. She race walked on Broadway towards Houston street where she was meeting her friends. Luckily, there was an Aldo on her way. Sweat started to drip down the back of her neck and run down her back. It was an unseasonable warm day in October and she was wearing black jeans and a long sleeve shirt.
Kate practically ran into Aldo where she was greeted by a pleasant salesperson "Good morning, let me know if there's anything I can help you with." Kate responded with a breathy "Hi there! Thanks, I will" and what she was sure was a deranged frantic smile or by that point probably a grimace.
She grabbed the first pair of open-toed black heels and flipped them over. Size 7. Perfect.
She hustled to the counter. The shoes rand up to be $75. Kate inwardly groaned. She paid. Grabbed the bag and literally ran to Houston street.
Kate hated being late. As hard as she tried, she couldn't stop the flashes of panic she experienced when she was cutting it close on time.
Sweaty, out of breath, and looking like an absolute mess with no makeup on, Kate was greeted by her friends; Amanda, Dan, and Paul who were waiting for her outside of Paul's apartment. With a coy grin, Paul pretended to tap a fake watch on his wrist and tap his foot. Paul, unlike Kate, was notoriously late. A trait Kate never failed to make a big deal out of whenever he was late to meet up with her.
She rolled her eyes and said between breaths, "I'm 2 minutes late! Let's just go." With that, Kate turned on her heel and the rest followed. After walking 20 straight seconds in silence Kate turned around and said without taking a breath, "Guys, I'm sorry for being snippy, I overslept and was late getting into the city to buy my outfit for Kara's wedding and Zara didn't have anything that fit me and I had to go to more stores than I thought and then I got stressed because I didn't want to be late and I was running and I'm sweaty and I didn't have time to put makeup on and I'm just a little worked up."
Kate took a deep inhale as she looked from one friend to the other. Dan put an arm around Kate and gave her a squeeze. Paul took her hand and looked into her eyes with mock concern and said "Hey. It's okay." Amanda said, "You need a mimosa." Dan put his arm around her shoulders and said "Brunch will make everything better."
Kate's body started to relax and they settled into friendly chatter until they reached their brunch spot, still 10 minutes early. Kate leaned against Dan while they waited for their table to be ready and her heart rate finally started to slow down.
Little did she know, everything would just get crazier from here.
