Sunrisers Hyderabad CEO Kavya Maran has suggested to BCCI officials that retired players like MS Dhoni should not be classified as uncapped during the retention process ahead of the mega auction. This discussion took place at a meeting with IPL franchise owners at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on July 31, where feedback was sought on player regulations and commercial aspects.

Present at the meeting were Shah Rukh Khan (Kolkata Knight Riders), Ness Wadia (Punjab Kings), Kiran Kumar Grandhi (Delhi Capitals), Sanjiv Goenka (Lucknow Super Giants), Rupa Gurunath (Chennai Super Kings), and Manoj Badale (Rajasthan Royals). Mumbai Indians' representatives attended via video conference.

Before the 2022 IPL mega auction, the BCCI allowed franchises to retain only four players, and this rule remains unless amended after the recent meeting. Kavya Maran emphasized the immense value senior players bring to the IPL, suggesting that their worth should not be limited to the uncapped player amount, as it disrespects their contributions and brand value.

Maran argued that retaining senior players as uncapped sets a wrong precedent, especially when new uncapped players receive higher salaries at auction. She believes the auction should dictate the value of retired players, respecting their contributions over the years. Sunrisers Hyderabad reached the finals in this year's tournament but did not advance to the playoffs from 2021 to 2023.
