Introduction

Dempo Sports Club, or simply Dempo, is an Indian professional football team that plays in the Goa Professional League. They are situated in Panjim, Goa. The Dempo Mining Corporation Limited owns and sponsors the club. The club, also referred to as The Whites, has consistently competed in all National Football Championships and has grown tremendously in popularity over the past forty years. In 2008, Dempo SC became the first football team from India to advance to the AFC Cup semifinals. The team has received numerous honours and awards. The team earned its first National Football League championship in the 2004–05 season. They repeated as league champions in the 2006–07 campaign, and then won three I–League titles in the league's inaugural season in 2007–08, in 2009–10, and once more in 2011–12, making them one of the most successful clubs on the national front with five National league titles. They are one of just two teams—along with Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan A.C.—to have won the trophy five times.

In addition, the team has won two Indian Super Cups, four Rovers Cups, fourteen Goa League Champions Cups, the Federation Cup in 2004, and the Durand Cup in 2006. The first Goan club to win the Rovers Cup was Dempo. As well In the 2011 rankings of clubs worldwide for the first ten years of the twenty-first century (2001-2010), released by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics, Dempo emerged as the fifth-ranked Indian team and 711 overall.

History

Bicholim Football Club, a premier First Division league team in the 1960s, was the precursor to Dempo Sports Club. The Bicholim Football Club is remembered by local football fans as one of the best teams in the nation. The Bicholim Football Club still holds players like Subhash Sinari, Bernard Olivera, Tolentino Serrao, Bhaskar, Kalidas Gaad, Manohar Pednekar, Bhai Pednekar, Ganpat Gaonkar, and Pandurang Gaonkar to a completely different standard than any other sports club at the time.

Dempo Souza later adopted Bicholim Sports Club and changed the name to Dempo Souza Sports Club in 1967. With players like Eustaquio, Dass, Balaguru, Olavo, Colaco, Inacio, Felix Barreto, Thapa, Ramesh Redkar, Socrates Carvalho, Sadanand Asnodkar, and Tulsidas Alornekar, the team remained one of the nation's strongest teams even at that time. The group finished as the Vasco Sports Club's Senior Division League's first runner-up in 1969.

After Dempo acquired Mr. Michael D'Souza's ownership interest in the Dempo Souza business, the Dempo Souza Sports Club officially changed its name to Dempo Sports Club. However, Dempo Sports Club flourished because Vasantrao Dempo, the head of the House of Dempo, generously supported the football team. Bob Bootland, a British coach who took at Dempo in 1978, revolutionised Indian football by employing a 4-3-3 formation. In 1978, the team once more won the Rovers Cup. One year later, the club defended their championship.

Home Ground

Dempo SC has played all of its I-League games there since Fatorda Stadium debuted in 1989.[71] Although little information has been made public, there have been rumours that Dempo SC may soon build their own stadium in Panjim, Goa.

In the 2012–13 I–League, Duler Stadium in Mapusa, which was controlled by the Goa Football Association, served as Dempo's home stadium alongside Tilak Maidan Stadium (starting at the end of January).[72] Duler became Goa's second stadium since 2006 to receive AstroTurf.[73][74] The fact that the stadium received a FIFA grant for the Astroturf indicated that it was a participant in FIFA's Win in India with India programme.
