Lucas Paqueta Cleared of Spot-Fixing Allegations After Two-Year FA Investigation
Lucas Paqueta

Brazilian midfielder Lucas Paqueta has finally been cleared of serious spot-fixing allegations after a long and stressful two-year investigation by the English Football Association (FA). The accusations, which surfaced in 2023, claimed that Paqueta deliberately received yellow cards in four separate Premier League matches as part of a gambling-related scheme. The alleged matches were against Leicester City in November 2022, Aston Villa in March 2023, Leeds United in May 2023, and Bournemouth in August 2023. If found guilty, Paqueta was at risk of a lifetime ban from English football. However, the FA has now officially announced that the charges could not be proven, and the Independent Regulatory Commission has cleared the West Ham midfielder of any wrongdoing in relation to match-fixing.
The FA initially took the accusations very seriously, recommending the harshest possible penalty if guilt was established. This development also halted Paqueta’s high-profile transfer to Manchester City, which was reportedly agreed upon for £85 million in August 2023. While that move never materialized, Paqueta remained a key figure at West Ham United and continued playing for the Brazilian national team. The club showed unwavering support for their player throughout the investigation.

The FA issued a statement after the final ruling, saying, “Lucas Paqueta denies the allegations against him, and the Regulatory Commission found no evidence of them at the hearing.” This decision brings closure to one of the most closely watched disciplinary investigations in recent Premier League history. Though the more serious match-fixing charges were dismissed, Paqueta was found guilty of two minor breaches — failing to fully cooperate during the investigation. While the punishment for these infractions has not yet been determined, a financial penalty is expected rather than any ban from competition.
Following the decision, Paqueta took to social media to share his relief and gratitude. “From the first day of the investigation, I have been clear about my innocence against the serious charges,” he wrote. “I can’t say more at this time, but I have no words to express my gratitude to God. I am looking forward to returning to football with a smile on my face.” He thanked his wife, who stood by him throughout, as well as his legal team, friends, and supporters. His statement was filled with emotion, underlining the mental toll the investigation had taken on him and his family.
West Ham United’s assistant chief executive Karen Brady also welcomed the decision, praising Paqueta’s resilience and professionalism. “We are delighted that Lucas has been proven innocent. He has maintained his innocence from the start, and as a club, we have always been by his side,” Brady said. “Despite the immense pressure, Lucas has been on the pitch every week and has given his all for the club. It has been a difficult time for him and his family, but he has maintained his professionalism throughout the process. He now wants to close this chapter, as does the whole of West Ham.”
The verdict is expected to positively impact Paqueta’s career, possibly reviving interest from top clubs in the future. As for West Ham, retaining such a talented and now-cleared player will boost morale within the squad. Though some clouds remain due to the pending minor penalties, the resolution of the spot-fixing case marks a significant victory for both Paqueta and the club. It is a story of perseverance, belief, and ultimately, vindication.
