IPL 2025 Faces Major Changes as Season Extends Due to Military Conflict
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has taken an unexpected turn, with the tournament extended by a week beyond its original schedule due to ongoing military conflict in the region. This disruption has overlapped with the start of the busy international cricket calendar, causing several IPL franchises to make last-minute changes to their squads. Teams are now scrambling to deal with player unavailability, with some even turning to cricketers currently playing in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for reinforcements. One such team is Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), which has brought in a replacement from the PSL.
RCB, led by Virat Kohli, has already secured a spot in the IPL 2025 playoffs. However, they still have one more game to play in the league stage, against Lucknow Super Giants on May 27. For this crucial match, the team will be without England’s wicketkeeper-batter Jacob Bethell, who will leave the IPL to join the England national squad for their upcoming series against the West Indies. In Bethell's place, RCB has roped in New Zealand’s Tim Seifert.
Tim Seifert is currently playing in the PSL for Karachi Kings, where he has performed impressively. Karachi Kings are set to face Lahore Qalandars in the PSL eliminator today (Thursday). If Karachi wins, they will progress to the second qualifier, and potentially the final, which is scheduled for May 25. Since RCB’s final league match is on May 27, Seifert is expected to be available in time. The IPL’s official press release has confirmed that Seifert will be ready to join RCB from May 24.
Seifert, a hard-hitting wicketkeeper-batter, has had a strong PSL season so far. He has scored 226 runs in 9 matches at a strike rate of 145.80 and an average of 25.11. Often partnering with Karachi captain David Warner at the top of the order, Seifert has played a key role in building strong starts for his team. He is no stranger to the IPL either, having previously represented Kolkata Knight Riders in 2021 and Delhi Capitals in 2022. Now, in 2025, he finds himself back in the league, this time filling in for Bethell.
Jacob Bethell, on the other hand, was playing in his debut IPL season. Unfortunately, he didn’t get much time on the field, featuring in only two matches. He made a strong impression when he returned to the playing XI on May 3, scoring a quick 52 off 33 balls against Chennai Super Kings. In total, Bethell scored 67 runs in the tournament at an impressive strike rate of 172. However, with his national duties calling, he will now return home after RCB’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 23.
RCB is also facing other challenges in their bowling department. Their reliable fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has returned to Australia due to the tense situation in India. His availability for the remainder of the tournament remains uncertain, especially with the World Test Championship (WTC) final approaching. Similarly, South Africa’s Lungi Ngidi has also departed to join his national team for WTC final preparations. To cover for Ngidi, RCB has signed Zimbabwean pacer Blessing Muzarabani as a replacement for the playoff stage.
Despite all these changes, RCB is in a strong position. With 17 points from 12 matches, they are currently in the top two on the points table. They have two more games left to solidify their position. Other teams that have confirmed their playoff spots include Gujarat Titans, Punjab Kings, and Mumbai Indians. With the season entering its final phase, the coming days promise intense action, unexpected changes, and thrilling finishes as the race for the title heats up.

This IPL schedule change due to conflict is a real headache. It's crazy how teams are scrambling to adjust. RCB bringing in Seifert from the PSL makes sense, but it shows the chaos. Wonder how this'll affect other teams' strategies. And what about the players? Must be tough dealing with all these last-minute changes.
