What Causes Dwarfism? | Growth Disorder
Foreign Veggies, little kitty, your height doesn't seem to be growing lately. If someone doesn't grow taller according to their age, it could lead to a condition called dwarfism. I'll explain this by answering a crucial question: what causes dwarfism?
Have you ever noticed how all your friends are of different heights? Some are taller, some are in the middle, and some are shorter than others. While it's normal for kids to grow at different rates, it becomes concerning when someone doesn't reach a certain height by adulthood due to a condition called dwarfism. This condition is characterized by adults whose height remains about 4 feet 10 inches (147 centimeters) or less. They fall into one of two categories: proportionate and disproportionate. In the proportionate class, the head and limbs are in proportion with the rest of the body. In the disproportionate class, the hands and legs are shorter compared to the rest of the body.
But the key question is, what can lead to dwarfism? Researchers believe there are more than 100 factors that can cause short stature. A common reason is when the pituitary gland produces too little growth hormone. It can also result from random genetic changes inherited from one or both parents. Depending on the type of dwarfism, two average-height parents can have a child with short stature, and it's also possible for two parents with dwarfism to have an average-height child. Other causes may include deficiencies in other hormones, poor nutrition, or genetic conditions like skeletal dysplasia, a category of rare genetic disorders that affect bones and joints and hinder growth and development.
Is there a way to treat this condition? While not all types can be treated, some types of dwarfism can be managed with growth hormone injections, which help achieve a height close to average. Other methods include surgeries to lengthen and straighten bones. If there's no genetic or medical condition involved, a healthy diet full of green vegetables and fruits, along with ample physical exercise, can solve short height issues in many kids.
But remember, my friends, many short individuals face a lot of discrimination due to a lack of awareness. Shorter kids are often mercilessly teased by classmates and are wrongly considered less intelligent. It's important to understand that besides some physical challenges, people with short stature are smart and intelligent individuals living normal lives like anyone else. In fact, little people often find clever ways to navigate the average-sized world. It is our moral duty to be kinder to them, treat them equally, and provide support to make their journey easier.
For individuals facing this condition, remember to be comfortable with who you are. Who knows, you could become the next big star!
Trivia time: Did you know 80% of little people are born to average-sized parents? There are an estimated 30,000 people with dwarfism in the United States and 651,700 in the world. Hope you learned something new today.
