He and I had been neighbors for a couple of weeks, and we had only exchanged a few hellos. One day, my cat decided to use his garden as a litter box. He, as an introvert, did not confront me directly. He simply left a courteous message on my porch, with a smiley face drawn at the end. I answered by cleaning his garden at night, so I wouldn’t have to face him.

I was curious whether if I teased him a little more, he would speak up or leave another note… So I started parking my car just an inch too near to his driveway every day. He saw, of course, because he was a good observer…This time, he didn’t say anything and began watering his grass just as I was about to leave for work, tiptoeing around the sprinklers. I was drenched in passive aggression and couldn’t help but chuckle every morning.

He continued to harass my cat by leaving his blinds open and staring at it with a dramatic sigh every time it approached his garden. I trained my cat to stare back through the window and make a daily standoff.

One day, my cat went to his porch with a dead mouse, and his dog gave a death stare to my cat. The neighbor suddenly jumped in and sent my cat back. I couldn’t understand his psyche was he offering peace or the declaration of war, I was unable to settle.

He attempted to make apologies by baking a box of my favorite cookies and bringing them to my doorstep alongside another note labelled peace offering. Not to be outdone, I answered by gifting his dog a scarf and leaving a note that said, Truce?

The next day, I received another note on my doorway. He welcomed me for coffee on his lawn. I accepted the invitation and got ready to meet him at 5:30 P.m. I was confused, as if I was going on my first date with him. The selection of dresses, jewelry, and lip tint was not easy for me. He looked handsome in his simple, jeans and T-shirt, his usual dress-up.

Two coffee mugs were placed on the table, there was no sound other than leaves rustling, and a beautiful light spread across the sky at sunset. I broke the stillness by simply pointing at the cat, then to the garden’s excellent grass, to which he answered with a thumbs up.

We waited for each other to speak for a few minutes, then I started talking about my personal life, and my routine. I had a strong feeling from his response that he knew everything about me… I felt a little awkward but questioned him without changing my facial expressions.

He was saying something, but my eyes were closing. I suppose I was losing my senses, I tumbled off the chair and noticed my missing locket which had just disappeared from my locked cupboard a few days ago, right behind his chair on the lush green grass.
